Too much effort has been spent balancing weapons between boats and relevance. It is impossible to anticipate the effects of any canon much layout being introduced as more and more variants are being put in. That effort could have been focused on content building instead.

A simple algorithm could fix this. When a new much configuration is saved, the software checks to see if the configuration is boat legal, by which I mean, no 2/3rds greater of the total damage belongs to one weapon type (AC, Gauss, SRM, LRM, SSRM, LAS, Pulse, PPC etc,.). This includes ER and U versions. No more than 2/3rds of hard points loaded will also be of the same type.

Prior to launch, the configs will be verified again, otherwise the Launch button will turn red.

The user community can be warned of such a mechanism ahead, enabling them to make changes before the announced patch date.

It's non canon, but hey, you are already being forced to make non canon weapons balancing anyway. Something got to give.

So... what is the Jenner Seven Foxtrot to do?

Or all variations of the Catapult spare for the Kilo Two?

Or any version of the Hunchback?

"Boating" is a common and even logical thing to do. You play to the strengths of your own preferences, the chassis, and the weapon system. In exchange, you have considerable gaps in your capabilities that you must learn to work around.

Typically, though, people will hinge around two or sometimes three weapon systems that round out the design a little better and give the player some options when confronted with situations where their 'primary' weapon system/style is ineffective.

Also, are you calculating alpha damage, or dps in this limitation?

I hate boating as much as the next guy, but boating is quite canon in BattleTech. Problem isn't boating, problem is weapon convergence and unreal accuracy for missiles (SRMs, LRMs). If 6-PPC-Stalker would spread its damage into different parts of the mech it shoots it won't be any more dangerous then any other mech. If 6-SRM-6-Catapult won't be able to land more then 20% of its missiles on a target 100+ meters away and will be splash-damaging itself when its firing point-blank it won't be that effective. There are many ways to balance currently unbalanced boating mechs, boating itself isn't a real problem.
