I've put over 100 hours into this game, and theres a few things that confuse me when it comes to stat design.
TL:DR - See link below. Ability to use short/medium/long range modules for each size of energy weapon, and, changes to the ton/slot requirements.
The current system lacks global variation and control across the Small-Large weapons.
The player is forced to pick their sized energy weapon loadouts dependent on the tonnage/slots. This for me is wrong:
- Pulse laser should be the same slot/ton requirements as the non-pulse version, and, weapon tonnage/slot requirements should be consistent across the size of the weapon.
- A new system which allows for Short/Medium/Long range weapon selection should be introduced. Removing the current Pulse/ER variants and replacing them with a new module system.
- This system will control the range/damage/heat of the weapon. Think of a "Module" for the weapon, a crystal which the user can purchase and fit into the weapon to customise it further.
- Players can then decide to have their laser "Long Range" (low DPS, high Heat, long duration), Normal Range (current stats), or, Short Range (high DPS, normal heat, short duration)
Some examples of the gameplay advantages:
Medium Laser - Long Range(low DPS, high Heat, long duration)
This allows the player to have extra range at a price. The higher heat requires control. The longer duration requires a better/longer tracking aim and puts the user at risk of being spotted.
Medium Laser - Medium Range(medium DPS, medium Heat, medium duration)
This is basically the current medium laser setup.
Medium Laser - Short Range(high DPS, medium Heat, short duration)
This allows the player to have extra damage at the cost of a shorter range. The duration of the laser is also shorter to work within the smaller radius the player will be in.

Expansion of Module System
This can be expanded to other weapon systems, but for me, Laser gameplay restrictions are the main concern.
Modules also add extra purchasing abilities for the user (c-bills and MC).
Anyway, i dont claim to know it all, this is just a suggestion from a gamer/designer with alot of experience.
Hopefully those who understand the current system will see what i'am getting at. Those that dont, i'am sure they can give us a funny comment of the day.
Cheers
