1. I bought the 9+9 upgrade and bought one 9+9 cool shot for every mech that I own on the first day that it came out. Never used one until tonight. Never. Heck, I couldn't even remember which key it was bound to. So I finally used one. What happened? I cooled down enough to get one more alpha. No big deal. The game was not ruined. I repeat: The game was not ruined.

2. So trial mechs are worthless? I bought an Atlas RS last night. Oops. I had no money left to upgrade it. With the double EXP thing going on, I decided to play it anyway. Stock. After 20 matches my W/L ratio is around 2.0. I mean please. With an AC/10, 2 large lasers, an LRM15, and a SRM this baby rocks. Heck, my HBK-4SP is almost stock. And it rocks too.

My two cents.

Not -worthless-, no. But several trial mechs they've had run pretty hot, and that can be kind of rough for a newer player who's more likely to be using one. Hopefully they do this "Build a Trial Mech" thing regularly, because stock (canon) variants are not always grand in a game like MWO (they are set up for tabletop values/use). Some stock variants also have other small issues, but nothing that renders them unusable. Just trickier to use well compared to a lean and optimized mech.

My earnings have been cut by 50,000 cbills after nearly every drop since they introduced coolants. True story.

Some of the stocks are actually quite good if you don't alpha like crazy and keep your weapons grouped... though ammo can be quite low.

Some of the bigger stocks (awesomes etc.) can be insta-shutdowns.

New people also seem to have issues understanding LRM lock, and I see a lot of them fire the missiles off grouped with another weapon randomly.

Then you need to make a better build or learn how to manage heat. I went a week without using cool shots because I mange my heat well.

Hmmm. That makes me think. What if for now they made all trial mechs come with 2 coolant for free to compensate for the poor item choices? Would help new players out who have to start out as trial mechs and would also balance out that they have no modules at all too since they aren't customizable.

Just an idea...

hell i dont use cool shots, not even on my beam gundam swayback, 8 med lasers, 19 double heat sinks, even on tourmaline desert i dont feel a need for cool shots, sure on that map you could pop 2 and fire two more alphas, but thats an expensive 1 time deal, screw that, heat management is your single greatest weapon in this game.

How about: managing my heat well + using cool shot + good build = more dmg

But as trial mechs are (till now) always stock mechs, the AS7-RS could qualifiy as a trial mech, too.

But yeah, some stock mechs are at least partly competitive, e.g. Atlas, AWS-9M, Catapult-C1, some Hunchbacks (-4G, -4SP, -4P), while other stock mechs are real crap. Especially those with significant low armor (compared to the possible maximum, e.g. COM-3A, Cicada), extreme low speed for their weight class (Raven-2X, -4X), low ammo or very bad heat management. Or all factors combined...

i stopped buying coolant, i just press P and power back on, i think i have exploded ONCE. when i was trying a new variant,
i figured out how much i could push this new loadout, now i'm pressing P again. immediately.
still have to suffer damage from heat, but getting stranded for 2 sec often gets me shot by some med laser or ac2, no big deal IMO

Coolant flush, meh, the changes to it made it no big deal, and yeah it really doesn't have much of an impact on normal play, but I think it could be a different story at higher level competitive play, where any edge no matter how small is desirable.

But trial mechs? Sorry I completely disagree, they are terrible, sure an experienced pilot can hop in one and do reasonably well (well some of them, let's see you get your 2.0 w/l in the commando trial?) but forcing new players into these monstrosities for the first 20+ matches is a cruel and unusual way to welcome new players into the game...
