I do not know if its because a lot of the established players are taking a break and waiting to see how PGI progresses, however, I feel that overall people in game are much more crude, and not very good sports.

In multiple games, where it has been a good brawl and fight, even if it was a stomp, the comments you see in the chat bar is always full of anger, accusations and poor sportsmanship.
Ill admit I'm guilty once in a while, but its a rare day when I post degrading or unsportsmanlike comments in the Chat bar.

Whats happened to civility, its just a game shesh.

Speaking for myself, I think my civility goes out the door when I'm stuck in ELO hell all day with 20+ losses compared to 5 wins.

If you're tired of losing in PUGs, find a group to join. That being said, I GG every game whether I win or lose, whether it's close or a stomp. If someone is being toxic, then call them out on it. Tell them there's no need to be toxic, and it's lame. Usually when you see that person again they will at least keep to themselves.

Even then, i understand where you are coming from, being stuck with guys who overheat and don't target, watching that from the
view screen can be painful and frustrating and occasionally the comment comes out about, omg what a noob team. But I try to keep those to myself, raging at them isnt going to improve their game. Its the lack of self control that astonishes me. Yes your having bad day, but we dont need to be the receiver of your anger, suck it up, swallow your pride, and be a good sport.

QFT

Even though I get frustrated with my teams a lot (actually made a thread about it and the elo system), I don't actually rage at them in game. I might make a mild comment or two in a particularly bad game but prolonged bitching never helped anyone.

If you can't work out your anger shooting the crap out of other people with a giant robot, you might need to consult Dr. Banner for anger management.

Hi all, i needed to vent and i did not know where i would. I started 2 weeks ago, and immediately was happy to find a game similar to the Sims2.
I payed for my membership and have bought some items with RL money. Though i never expected to be treated the way i have been by some of the most vicious members i have ever come across in game play in the history i have been playing games.
This is not how an online community should be conducted, i'm really shocked. I can't believe i have invested money into this game to have lousy response as a paying customer. I have been threatened and kicked out of places because certain members knew the "owners".
This is ridiculous that people can not enjoy a simple game. I don't think this is for me and i commend those who put up with this type of gameplay. It's unbelievable to me and baffling.

Halo 3:

Quote

Ok i don't wanna start a fight here, but i was just playing matchmaking

Me (British)
Other guy (Aussie)
and 2 other guys (American)

And through out the whole game they was bad mouthing us....

I encounter this every day, and no im not saying all americans have their head soooo far up their *** that they lost half their height.... im just saying 90% of you have.. Really

Wizardry 101:

Quote

I'm a parent and game with my 8-year old son. We've enjoyed our time on Wizard 101, but I'm likely going to cancel my subscription. Tonight, my son was heckled by another player who had open chat. As a spoiled sport this individual proceeded to cast 0 level spells on himself and allow my son's character to die. While I understand that this is a game and no one has to follow any code, players should remember that little kids could be on the opposite end. My son's feelings were very hurt....He couldn't understand why someone would treat him so poorly.

This game's chat box is beyond tame. The mellowest online experience I've had, ever. Even Halo:CE was more hardcore in terms of verbal sparring.

I don't count halo, because as a whole xbox has a much younger fan base, and going on an open mike is begging to be trolled or abused by people with no sense of dignity.

its mostly 10-15 year olds doing it

Its not just MWO, this mentality has been going on for a decade in online gaming. No one game is to blame for this, its the entirety of online gaming within the players themselves.

In the 90s it was about sportsmanship and just enjoying the competition. Teams and units/guilds/clans formed so that the competition could be taken to the next level. But the sportsmanship remained. Sometime in the mid 2000's this fell off.

Now what we have is the vitriol filled sense of entitlement. New players are entering the market and expect the same treatment they got in school. Where everyone gets a medal, and their personal experience, not that of the team matters the most. This is even seen in professional sports, things like the NBA is riddled with it. I used to watch it in the 90s, but not anymore.

If their experience is challenged, by say a teammate using tactics or configs they don't agree with, they blast their teammate. You see this in threads such as "Light mechs SHOULD only SCOUT" or that certain mechs such as the Awesome or Spider should never be used. This is also seen when opponents use tactics or strategies that counter the individuals'. You see them get irate and call them exploiters, hackers, and other profanities. Failing that they go to the forums and make nerf threads.

This isn't an easy fix. Only fate and time can fix the situation. Time to see these players drop off as they get older. Fate to see if the next Generation returns to sportsmanship and competition.

Peer pressure may work. Though anti-bullying advocacies make this hard. But perhaps joining with groups and units/guilds/clans that promote sportsmanship and not allowing these other players to join may work. Though they tend to band up against such groups, which already happens in the form of calling them out in the premade hatred threads.

There's a little snag in the theory: Reality check, Most Internet trolls are probably trolls in real life, too

Quote

One of the biggest myths about the Internet goes like this: people who are perfectly pleasant and reasonable in real life become total jerkfaces when they get online. It conjures up the image of a mild-mannered office clerk, who talks courteously and sweetly to everyone, and then goes home and spews venom on comment sections and web forums for hours. Like the Secret Trolling Life of Walter Mitty. And I'm sure this does happen. But, I'm guessing, most people who troll on the internet actually are trolls in real life, too.

Quote

So it's all because of all that anonymity and untrammeled freedom. Let's get some trammels in that Internet, stat!
Arthur considers some possible solutions, like forcing everybody to use their real names (which would never fly) or restricting free speech somehow (except that the U.S. has the First Amendment). He concludes that maybe there should just be a sign that flashes occasionally on websites, saying "what you're doing here might not remain private."

But here's the thing — I feel reasonably confident that the "Walter Mitty" model of Internet trolling only accounts for a small percentage of the overall troll population. Rather, most of the trolls out there are people who would be just as happy to troll you in real life... if you ever spoke to them in real life.

Quote

And I'm going to just come out and say it — a large proportion of the worst, most horrendous internet trolls are probably people who lack a certain amount of social graces in their "meatspace" interactions as well. Including some people you probably would flee, long before they got as far as opening their mouths.

But on the internet, there's no easy way to flee people before they can say their piece. It's actually the opposite of the way most people think the internet works — and it's definitely the opposite of the way futurists predicted the internet would work.
Not too long ago, there were a slew of articles predicting that the internet would close off our communal conversation, once and for all. Because there are liberal news sites and conservative news sites, nobody would ever consider anyone else's point of view. Liberals would only talk to liberals, and conservatives to conservatives. Christians would only take part in Christian discussions, and LGBT people would talk amongst themselves. This certainly happens, to a large extent — but so does the opposite. On the internet, there's no foolproof way to shut out the people you would never, ever speak to in real life.

PGI is doing their best to alienate the "old guard" BT fans and cater to CoD Crowd ™, what you are seeing is the effect of former group rapidly shrinking and latter group getting larger.

I tracked it as far back as 1999.

Altough when I watched some historical videos describing how RTS games came to be, it was mentioned that Warcarft 2 and C&C respectively got popular through a massive flamewar about which game/studio is superior, so make that 1995.
