Firstly, wanted to say that even as a player who favours short range weapons, I love tourmaline desert. Great map and good work PGI.
Just wanted to share a story about a recent match.
I'm not a leader. I run a cat c1 with three lpls and ams, with a 300 xl engine, 2 jjs and nothing else but heat sinks. As such with speed tweak I move like a medium mech, with the durability of a heavy and it's pretty damned hard to disarm me because everything is in my torso, and everyone shoots for my ears anyway. I run in, hit hard, circle my targets and then do my best to disengage. Usually the latter is not quite as successful as the former.
Dropped on tourmaline last night in my garish purple and green phranken camo scheme and started doing my usual, which is to run as fast and hard as I can to get into flanking position. I never expect company as I always pug.
This time, I notice a long line of blue arrows following in my wake.
"Uh. Why is everyone following me?" I type
Unanimous reply "you look like you know what you're doing! Lead on, glorious leader!"
Crap.
"Guys, my MO is to run head first into the enemy and hit them as hard as I can and then go splat. I have no functional plan!"
Again, unanimous. "That's okay! We trust you!"
Crap.
"Okay, well I'm going to try and flank them at the middle. Everybody goes for the ring. I'm not gonna be that dumb. That's as far as my plan goes"
At that point I had to shut my gob because I ran head first into an enemy centurion. I start blasting away, reducing his CT to red, blowing off his left arm, and his LT and RT to yellow, but he and a companion of his I hadn't seen managed to crit my xl and I go down in flames. Standard fare.
"I told you guys."
"We will avenge you, fearless leader!" Cried one of my fellow puggers.
*%#* me if they didn't.
Our heaviest mech was a stalker, while the enemy had a couple of atlases, at least one k2 and a smattering of lights, but mostly we were outgunned. I flipped from viewpoint to viewpoint and watched as my team, outgunned and already undermanned by two mechs (we had an atlas dc at the beginning of the match, so we only had 7 active mechs to their 8, minus me cause I was dead) not only avenge me but systematically slaughter the opposing team. I watched our stalker and a phract hose down first one atlas and then the other, watched the phract with some support by a treb strip an enemy jagermech to its bones in seconds, and watched the whole team, minus the stalker who finally got toasted hunt down and finish off the centurion I had so gloriously wounded.
End of the match we had two dead mechs, 1 dc, to all 8 of our opponents. I don't know if it's because my flanking maneuver worked, or if my team just had remarkable synergy for a group of puggers, but my team knocked my socks off with their performance.
As I said, I'm not a leader, but if I was, I would have been damned proud to lead that same team any day of the week. They were aces, every last one.
