Didn't you know Earth is a unique snowflake? Other planets don't got what we got, man. It's an ice world or a jungle world or an ocean world or a desert world, what have you. It's a literary device that helps differentiate planets in our minds; best examples would be Tatooine, Hoth, Dagobah. Even if we accept in reality that there would be environmental conditions, rarely in fiction do we see anything that isn't a standard across the entire planet UNLESS it's a terran carbon-copy. And those maps would be represented by River City and the like, I would imagine.
