If letting users pick the map they want to drop in means problems for the matchmaking service, then I suggest the following almost-as-good alternative.
Let us define which mech in our bay gets used for each map.

In Lieu Of Letting Us Pick Maps

This is a great idea. Or, at the very least, let us choose based on expected climate and/or terrain type and map size.

So you want to select the Mech build that goes to a specific Map, versus not being allowed to select what Map your selected Mech gets to go to due to MM issues it may cause?
OK then. Good luck with that...

Why can you adapt your tactics based on what mech you are using vs what map you drop on? Are you only capable of using ER PPCs and LRMs on alpine? Can you only use a splat cat on river city? Can you not manage your heat on caustic valley?
A good player is one who learns how to use their mech effectively in any map. Know the strengths of the mech you use and play to those strengths. Work with your team.

This has the same problem that would be caused by being able to select maps, which is that everyone would use ultra specialized builds. I'm fine with specializing mechs to fight in different range brackets, but letting people always take their Splatcat on small maps and their 6ERPPC Stalker on large maps would be going too far. We have enough issues already with highly specialized builds without letting people select their maps.

I can, and do adapt to the map I'm on, obviously. You guys talk about mech specialization like it's a bad thing, but that's another debate. If we were having it, I'd offer that part of being a good player is designing a good build for the battle ahead, and a mech designed to be acceptably mediocre on all terrains is as much a specialty as one that's optimized for a specific map.
Accepting that map selection is coming, since I think I've read as much, and hypothesizing that the delay on map selection may be due to possible matchmaking issues, I offered my suggestion as a possible workaround to accomplish the same objective. I made this suggestion not because I hate being in the wrong mech on the wrong planet.
I made it because it seems silly that a mech pilot wouldn't know what PLANET he or she is dropping on until it's too late to adjust to it, if desired.
