Alot of people at the time were hoping that the Splat Cat would be chosen, however this came at the same time as the missile damage change.
Then people were banking on maybe an AC20 cat or Gauss Cat... basically people were hoping this kind of mech would win because of the general feeling that the Catapult chassis is overpowered and that by handing it to newbies, it would help show that the catapult chassis can excel even in the hands of the untrained.
It is also the fact that many feel the Dragon chassis is not good for new players, considering it's basically a slightly heavier CN9. [the old moniker back in weight matchmaking was you didn't take a dragon, because your opponent could end up with a catapult, if you wanted the Dragon's fireplower, take a CN9 because you could outfit very similar] That and many have an aversion to the XL engine that resides in the current 5n dragon.
That being said, I've had some very good matches in this mech, to the degree of considering actually buying a 5N and giving it this configuration. The Dual large lasers help give decent damage at decent range while allowing you to still use the arm reticle for aiming [which I prefer] with the 15 point punch of the Gauss for long range engagements and quick shots on faster moving target's at medium ranges. The XL300 engine gives it some get up and go, and would only be bolstered by the piloting skills for the mech.
So I don't think that the 5N trial is a bad mech in any way, I just think it's not what people wanted to win, because they were attempting to reveal the cheese of the Catapult mech to the devs.
