This is the mech that the community voted on and I always here people ranting about how it was rigged and this mech is terrible, even if it was the best of what we got to vote on.

I have never in my life piloted a Dragon, so today I decided to give this trial a whirl. And this was the results. (just a random pug)

I myself, really like this mech. I can not for the life of me find a problem with it. It seems like a very solid build and I did a very decent damage output and kills.

So my question is, why the hate? Why are only a select few happy with this mech?

Because the internet is powered by tears and grief, not praise and happiness.

Where did you get that community is not happy with it? I checked the threads here in general and people seem to be quite happy with it. Biggest question about it seems to be what the C stands for.

We've been over this.

one screen does not a good build or mech make.

I could just as easily do what the golds did when the spider released and just kill stole or waited for everyone to die so I can mop up the 4 near dead mechs left in the game. Take my photo and declare it a good mech despite the spider being completely and utterly useless.

Or stump some steeringwheel underhivers and call something fine.

Childish one video, one image examples the likes of Sean lang and Mack1 are a huge problem with reporting imbalance.

I tried it. For a trial mech, it worked out wonderfully. +1

Except I have 1 kill with it and 502 damage, 200 more than the next person. so I was obviously actively fighting with it. and not mopping up kills. else my damage output would be way lower. As you can see I also have 7 assists. So I was not just hiding and moping up kills.

Eh, I don't like Gauss Rifles. That is the only beef that I have with it.

1. Its a dragon so the centre torso is seriously easy to hit, and it is known to be a bad chassis for newbies; i.e. the trial players.

2. Runs an XL... makes newbies explode good.

3. Doesn't run fast enough to make the dragon chassis actually worth using due to low rated engine.

4. There were so many other superior designs.

From what I understand it's mainly because it's a dragon.
As a secondary it's a slow dragon.
And the biggest reason is probably because it has a low alpha.

I only dislike it for the relatively low speed on the chassis, an equivalent Cataphract would be only slightly slower but have more armor and free tonnage. Of course the Cataphract wouldn't survive as well with an XL engine.

Alot of people at the time were hoping that the Splat Cat would be chosen, however this came at the same time as the missile damage change.

Then people were banking on maybe an AC20 cat or Gauss Cat... basically people were hoping this kind of mech would win because of the general feeling that the Catapult chassis is overpowered and that by handing it to newbies, it would help show that the catapult chassis can excel even in the hands of the untrained.

It is also the fact that many feel the Dragon chassis is not good for new players, considering it's basically a slightly heavier CN9. [the old moniker back in weight matchmaking was you didn't take a dragon, because your opponent could end up with a catapult, if you wanted the Dragon's fireplower, take a CN9 because you could outfit very similar] That and many have an aversion to the XL engine that resides in the current 5n dragon.

That being said, I've had some very good matches in this mech, to the degree of considering actually buying a 5N and giving it this configuration. The Dual large lasers help give decent damage at decent range while allowing you to still use the arm reticle for aiming [which I prefer] with the 15 point punch of the Gauss for long range engagements and quick shots on faster moving target's at medium ranges. The XL300 engine gives it some get up and go, and would only be bolstered by the piloting skills for the mech.

So I don't think that the 5N trial is a bad mech in any way, I just think it's not what people wanted to win, because they were attempting to reveal the cheese of the Catapult mech to the devs.

I bet he got this impression the same way he got his personal impression of the 5N©...by reading ONE post / playing ONE game.

It was a bit like tossing a coin. It could've gone either way. If he had lost, we would now read a "the 5N© is terrible" thread. *ducks*

I have Dragons and they're fun after you get some experience in them. The key word here is experience.

As mentioned the dragons have thier weaknesses but can be overcome with practice.

This particular Dragon has more than usual and also lacks in the versatility of weapons the Dragon can carry and the game offers. Add the fragile, lead your shot, and ammo dependent Gauss Rifle with next available weapon being 2LL all of which are suspended in 2 exposed arms (Stick Dragon comes to mind) that all use a seperate part of the reticule to track with in an already walking tank type of control system that is awkward for those who have never played a tank.

Now put all this into the hands of the new player and hope they'll come back for more because of custom Mechs.

Considering the struggles we have heard from the new players I don't see this being very newplayer friendly.

In the hands of an experienced Pilot sure!
