I noticed that there are a bunch of people listed as members of various factions in the matchmaking making system - however I can't for the life of me find where to join a house.
any tips?

Just as you hae done already. Really "joining a faction" has to wait until community warfare comes along.

Depends, just choosing the icon does nothing now, but joining a house community has a lot of meta game benefits.
