Explosions are pretty weak looking right now. Add shock waves. It's a really inexpensive effect and it makes explosions look cooler. Mechwarrior Living Legends has them.

Why not! as you say it would look cool. I would take it one step further and have visible sign of concussion like dust, gravel, small stones, branches, water etc. being blown outwards from the point of the explosion.
