As we know... assists are easy to "acquire" in any match. Doing any damage to a target and the target dies sometime during the match... it's an assist. It's fine for the purposes of giving a small bonus to any player (particularly newbies) that contribute that damage that involves the destruction of a mech's death. However, it isn't very viable in "competitions" where assists are calculated. It is easy to abuse this mechanic by design... and needs a revamped version of it...

There's another kind of assist at the moment... the Savior Kill and the Defensive Kill.. where you get a really nice bonus for being part of a mech's destruction. The Defensive Kill is a more of a "duh" to "doing your job"... and the Savior Kill doesn't require too much... only that the target is critical (50% or less according to patch notes). These actually have a lot more value since they actually involve a contribution, even if you don't directly get a kill.... of course these should be factored in to the "tourney version" of an assist. The Defensive Kill operates the same way... you don't have to necessarily kill, but at least assist.

My idea is to create a "destruction assist". It operates on a similar principle of the Savior Kill. When you stop contributing damage to an enemy target for whatever the reason (you or the enemy break off and never meet each other again, only to see the enemy die much later in the match), you should get the basic assist bonus... since you were a part of hurting the mech earlier in the match. However, if you were taking part in actively destroying the mech in its final stages, this "assist" should be more valuable. You need to do a minimum of damage IMO (like a small percent or like 15-20 damage at least) to be able to collect this assist. This is a better way IMO of factoring "true assists" in team oriented play. I know this can be abused for the purposes of the tourney, but it doesn't have the same lame "scrape the mech and not be a true team player" that have festered in recent tourneys. This bonus should operate within like say 10-15 seconds near a mech's death.

For those TL;DR, the basic "assist" metric is flawed, and my proposed new bonus would add in another assist bonus that should be factored in with savior and defensive kills (which are primarily assists) that is a lot more meaningful than the basic assist bonus for the purposes of tournies counting assists.

Not all assists are made equal. This game suggests that they are, but they are not... especially when it comes to tourney time where they factor in assists. That's why there needs to be a slight differentiation.

Even if there was no added bonus, it needs to be factored in differently for the purposes of tourney play with a better set of rules surrounding it.
