This is something that has always bothered me, when the weapon lore does not match the actual weapon stats. The Gauss Rifle is supposed to be a rail gun, which uses magnets to fire projectiles at extremely high velocities. However, when you look at the actual projectile speed, it's about the same as a mid-range autocanon. If the entire point of the weapon is to have an extremely high projectile velocity, shouldn't it behave that way in game? The gun already has a lot of cost associated with using it, so I don't think it's too much to ask that it be made to behave like the description says it does. I don't really care if it's made faster than the current projectiles, or the current faster projectiles are made slower, I just want consistency. The travel time for the Gauss rifle in MW4 was very fast, and it felt like a gauss rifle. I miss that.
Am I the only one bothered by this?

I was looking into Hunchie builds the other day and was pondering swapping out the AC/20 for a Gauss. After looking at the stats, I didn't see much justification for the extra ton. Just a bit of range, which didn't interest me since I'm most effective in the 0-600m ranges. And some heat, I guess, but Hunchies are pretty good about dealing with heat.
Now if the projectile speed was, say, closer to an AC/2 or PPC it might be a different story, but for now I'm not really impressed.

Fair point, it is technically a bit different than a rail gun.
Do you really think making it fast would make it OP? I mean there are already a lot of costs associated with it, like tonnage, slot space, and the potential to explode. I think what they should do is keep the weapon's defining characteristics, it's weapon speed and range, and change other factors to insure it's still balanced. You can adjust the heat output, cycle time, weight, slot usage, damage, etc. All those thing can be changed to help keep it from being too powerful.
I don't feel like it's close to being OP now do you? From what I have noticed, not a lot of people use it now anyway. Would you agree?

it's velocity is simply for balancing reasons... sometimes realism has to take a back seat.
I totally disagree with this: The Gauss Rifle needs to be visually different from any other type of ballistic weapon. The concept is straight forward, the round is fired at very high velocities to enable it to penetrate heavy armour; normally the projectile will contain a DU penetrator to impart a massive kinetic value at the point of impact. The effects that we should be seeing are:
1. A very fast transit to the target, maybe even three times faster than an Auto cannon round.
2. Possible visual disturbances in the air (similar to the pulse effects that Aurora leaves - sorry
I forgot Aurora doesn't exist does it)
3. The round needs to do a lot more damage than it currently does; I would say at least twice as
much.
4. Fragmentation of the target and shock wave effects as it is hit.

That would make it instantaneously OP. It was already considered OP and the best Ballistic weapon available before it had its health nerfed. What you suggest would essentially make it a Hitscan weapon that hits harder than an Ac20 at a much longer range. This is a game, it needs balance.

What I was thinking would be to give it a very long recycle time. This would make it act more like a bolt action sniper rife. It's supposed to be a sniper weapon right, why not make it act like a bolt action sniper rifle?
Right now it has about the same recycle time as as most energy weapons. If you gave it a longer recycle time that would make it practically useless as a close quarters weapon, just like a normal sniper rifle. I don't think making it hit a lot harder is a good idea, because then if several members use it to pop up shot hide and repeat, it might be too powerful. But if the recycle time is increased, maybe a small damage increase would be ok, I'm not sure.
My main concern is that I want it to feel like the totally unique weapon it is supposed to be. Right now, it does not act much different than an autocannon.
What do you guys think about that?

Yeah it could use a small buff to projectile speed. I ditched the Gauss on my Centurion because the AC/10 has better DPS. But x2 Gauss is worth using. Also in closed beta it had The Matrix effect, that was cool.
