Is it just me, or do Mechs look weird when they have their paint stripped? It might look cool on certain graphics settings, but when it looks like this fro many players, Something's gotta give, surely?

The damage shaders are still a work in progress, I believe. They're occasionally removed and put back in. Hopefully someday we get damage that actually looks like scorched, perforated metal.

At first I thought I was having graphical glitches when I saw that "paint".

Also, why pure white? it's kinda stupid to have a white base metal/something which screams "hit me" every time you scratch your paint on the dropship.

What color would you suggest as a background that's neutral for all other colors to be balanced against?

I don't know, anything darker. Some shade of gray comes to mind.

I don't care if it isn't a high contrast scheme between regular paint and base armor if that's what you're getting at.

It looks to me like a rendering issue where, for whatever reason, the base model is bleeding through. Given that there is now a wide variety of colors, white seems like the natural base... I mean, since it's the default color for almost every canvas in every image editing program I've ever used.

Having said that, I don't work in the graphics industry, so, this is just opinion based on limited experience. I'm sure someone will be by with a better explanation soon.

I've noticed this, especially on Cataphracts, since the last patch.

It's not "pure white".

It's "Lack of texture map".

In the past instead of that color there was a silver polished metal look. Like the armor and paint had been ablated away leaving fresh polished metal. I think the white is a missing texture like other have suggested.

phracts and altas seems to have those white or bright silver damage textures. other mechs like the cent have very nice looking ones

Pretty sure that's always been there, it's just more noticeable how unfinished the damage textures are now that 'Mechs don't continue to glow at "AAAAH MY EYES" levels after being hit.

Yea it seems to be in for certain mech, not for others. I know the Stalkers also seem to have much more finished damage textures where it really looks like you've stripped the armor off them and you're seeing internals.

they actually mentioned the removal of the dmg shaders somewhere...and i can't remember the reason why they did it.

i took a careful look in the testing grounds and noticed that some mechs (like the centurion and the cataphract) get decals of the damage done to them. it looks like molten armor creeped down their legs or something. i will take some pictures next time i get there.
