Upon the introduction of 12v12, what if the team commander (TC) didn't have a mech and didn't count toward the 12 mechs in each team?
This would be an optional position when forming a group. Players could opt-in to the role when launching solo, or within the group interface.
The TC could give commands via the Battlegrid, spectate through other players (and provide one-on-one coaching), use team-member artillery and air strikes, plus other features (such as UAVs) as they are added to the game.
Another option might be to include the mechless TC as one of the 12 players, so any tonnage limit (assuming this is a thing one day) is spread across 11 players instead of 12.
This may already be under consideration, but I would be interested in other players' thoughts.

People can be TC's right now, at the expense of being able to play while they're giving commands (assuming no VOIP team). Giving it to a non-combatant would both increase survivability and give that person sort of the MechCommander experience. Something I enjoyed.
