I like microphones. I play a lot of TF2 and it's absolutely vital to good teamplay. I hop onto a ventrilo server whenever it's not something that is readily supported. They are really, really great. They also alleviate that problem with getting blasted because you were typing.
But y'know what they do that I'm always annoyed with? Even when there's no real reason for it, they let you hear everything, from everyone, all the time. Even when said parties are DEAD.
I want you guys to mess with my microphone. If I'm hunkered in a valley with all my sensors turned on low, maybe make my signal all choppy, make it a little hard to hear my comrades unless I turn my signals up. If I can get line of sight on some guys and be somewhere within the same county, let me pick up their transmissions. If someone, I dunno, EXPLODES?!? Turn off their mic for the round or something. Maybe offer me a better, stealthier, more secure comm setup for my light mechs for a few C-Bills! Let there be some open frequencies so we can shout things at our enemies, too. Teamspeak is great for strategizing, but there's just so much fun to be had with comments like "Had enough, Steiner?" and "LOOK OUT BELOW!" *STOMP* Make jamming signals make us resort to text communication even!
There is a whole mess of stuff that could be done with this and it will add nothing but juicy, oozing, flavor to the game.

You know, I was thinking something similar.
I'd like to have four forms of communication Teamspeak - Gamespeak - Whisper, and worldspeak
Teamspeak being exactly like you'd think, talking to your own team over the comms
Gamespeak being where your message can be heard by anyone
Whisper like in a lot of games, where you can speak directly to one person at a time, friend or foe.
And a new one, Worldspeak, where your 'mechs external speakers boom, so anyone in the nearby vicinity can hear you.

Although this is a very cool suggestion and would definitely increase immersion immensely, players will use comm software outside the MWO platform to overcome this. Welcome to meta gaming.

+1 sid rood
i certainly hope pihrana doesnt even bother with in-game voice comms...history has proven they are all teh suck, and with TS3/Ventrilo out there, its a waste of time better spent doing other things

Lots of people here are looking for that immersion and won't. There has always been a really avid and healthy fanbase of people who won't even play in 3rd person mode. I know, I'm part of that. I say don't count it out, but I'm not going to hold my breath over it.

Pardon me, I have to change my pants.
I would perform a variety of unsavory acts and such to have a function that lets my microphone fade out with range. It would be SO COOL to use a jammer on all the radio channels and force everyone near you into using this.

I like the idea. It adds an element of realism to the game. And it only makes sense, and adds an element to the information warfare portion of the game. Not only what was mentioned with having a more covert communication array, but why not have the light mechs be able to eavesdrop on unsecure communications?

Only if there's an option to disable it, imo.
The last thing I want is to hear some 12-year old kid screaming over the intercom.
Text-chat should be more than enough, imo.

I'm going to guess you've never actually used a microphone if you think text is good enough.
There's a pretty good reason the telegraph died out in favor of phones. Also good reasons as to why Skype supports voice calling and VOIP and the like are big services.
And of course there will be mute functions, anyone with a brain knows some people are going to be idiots.

You are joking right? Voice chat is the standard in games today. Typing in the middle of a battle is laughable, at best. They MUST include voice chat. Even trying to imagine typing in-game makes me chuckle. A game like this cannot have you paying attention to anything but the action. I honestly still think you made that up to get a reaction. Typing, hahahahaha! Yeah right. If they don't offer voice chat, ouch. EVERY other quality game does. Hell, even the consoles are full voice chat. And for those that think that every other player will be a 12 year old ninny, just mute them. It really is that simple. Typing, hahahaha! Yeah right!
