A fetish for the new perhaps? Seems to account for the ebb and flow in the range of mechs fielded.

Yup, YLW is a one trick pony. I bought one when they were knew to try out the whole hero mech thing, but I never use it. It doesn't even have an engine anymore, the poor guy.

It needs another laser or missile point on its left arm to make up for not having melee and also keep it from becoming useless after its AC20 gets nuked by the first volley.

It has less hardpoints couse it was the 1st hero mech. They wanted to start adding premium content softly to have the less possible complains about p2w and promise breaking.

If you bought it, that's your own problem. Should know better than to buy a 50T variant that only has 3 weapon hardpoints. Personally, I like seeing Yens because they're easy food. Strip the wonder arm and that's it for them. Hey, you paid money for it. You spent MC on that pile of trash. I was here on its first day saying it was junk.

Should it get some kind of buff? Ya... but it won't.

I honestly think the YLW, even with its ability to carry double UAC/5s in a single arm or a single AC/20, deserves to at least have more than just two energy hardpoints to support its primary ballistic. I'd probably throw an extra energy hardpoint on the left arm or the left torso, or maybe even a two-tube missile hardpoint.
But that's just me.

a fast moving ac20? what's wrong with that? Played right the wang is a considerable threat.

The Wang does everything the Hunchback does worse. Mounting your primary weapons system on your arm means it loses 66% of damage from losing its arm. At least with the Hunches, they have to take off the Torso to do that.

But, the hunchback's hunch is huge and frequently shot off, plus when its shot off it also takes the arm off with it (which often has a laser). The hunchback's huge shoulder also makes it nearly suicidal to run an XL engine while the Centurions' skinny frames make them surprisingly survivable.

I used it in high ELO, but usually I'm the only one, in fact I never saw an other...

I would NEVER use it in 8v8 or clanwar, would be insulting.

I use it in 8v8 as cover for our lights, and it is great. Most time I am way over our assaults with dmg and elo.

Hero mechs should be worse than their free variants. The idea is that they're money grinders, -not- competitive mechs.

If they make any of the hero mechs "good", you end up toeing the line of pay to win.

You use the CN9-A for the Cent frame, no Wang. 2 ML + 3 SRM6 = will eat a yen lo wang for breaksfast, lunch, dinner and occasionally late night snacke.

I believe we're comparing the Yen Lo Wang exclusively, so even though I'd rather take a CN9-D any day (since I care not for the AC/20), I see no real reason to bring the CN9-A up.
Apart from the fact that you mention it basically would chew up the YLW...

Sounds incredibly boring to only run 1 loadout on 1 variant of one chassis.

Mix it up son

Personally, whenever I see the Yen Lo Wang on the opposing team, I'm so happy because it will be disarmed faster than a Splat Cat by everyone on my team. It doesn't matter what weapon is placed in the arm, that arm is tore off quickly. For that matter, the right arm on all Cents are tore off quickly. Everyone knows to target it. If you look at all fights, its armless Cents that are left standing if they are alive at the end. Running all you damage in one arm is a bad op.

As a cent-jockey I agree with the OP. The YLW is the weakest of the bunch. My favorite configs are as follows.

CN9-A:
Endosteel
RA: Gauss Rifle
RT: 3 tons of ammunition 1 double heatsink
CT: XL235 engine for a speed of 76kph and 2 medium lasers
LT: 3 streak SRM2s with two tons of ammunition
LA: Nothing

Firepower: 34
Heat Efficiency: 1.44
Standard Armor: 304pts

PUG only with a K/D of 2.25 and W/L of 1.28

CN9-AL
Endosteel
RA: 2 ER Large Lasers
RT: 3 Double Heatsinks
CT: XL 265 engine for a speed of 86kph and 2 Medium Pulse Lasers
LT: 2 streak SRM2s and 1 ton of ammunition 2 double heatsinks
LA: 1 double heatsink

Firepower: 36
Heat Efficiency: 1.17
Standard Armor: 335pts

Pug only with K/D of 1.85 and W/L of 1.18

Just looking at the YLW hardpoints, and working out its equipment on paper without buying the mech I knew I wasn't going to be satisfied. Rhent is right. If I come up against them, they're toast. They just don't have the all-round capability that a cent normally has. If they implement the hatchet that the YLW is supposed to have, then it may change things a little, but as it stands, it's the worst cent, and therefore the worst Hero 'Mech IMO.

It still depends on how you ride your YLW. If you let rip off your arm so easily it is your falt. And I can tell that I don't lose my arm more often than any other mech.

The want needs a missile slot added to its left torso, problem solved.

Most Centurion pilots don't seem to twist away to bring their shield arm up while waiting for their ballistic to reload. This applies to a lot of YLW pilots too. The simple act of waving the cannon arm around can keep it lasting much longer than you'd expect. This also applies to Dragons.

Cent pilots almost by default need to be turned to the right of their opposition showing their left disposable/ablative arm. I use it all the time. If my gun arm goes before my shield arm, shame on me.

Edit: Dukarriope, right on. Absolutely.
