Question about unlocking. To open the Elite you have to have basic on three chassis...do you recommend buying and holding on to all three or selling them off as you move from chassis to chassis?

That is up to you. I kept all variants hoping that maybe sometime in the future, even the crappy ones will get viable via quirks.

It's tough to let go of your first purchased mech

As said before, up to you. Personally since I have 48 mech bays now, I buy them all to give them a try and sell the ones that don't suit me.
For example I kept all of the Ravens. I have a jumpjetting AC-20 Raven. A sniping PPC Raven. And a harassment 3-L. But the Jenners? Sold them all though I kept the Founder's. Awesomes? I own all but one, but I'll probably sell at least three of them. Same with Cicadas. Bought 'em all. Sold 3. Stalkers? Half way through getting them. My favorites are the 4N (its odd missile hardpoints forces the idea of balancing ranges with SRMs and LRMs) and the 3H (it just feels betters, maybe because it was my first).

Personally I try to keep all the mechs that are A. Fun, or B. Ones I do well with. Most of the time A and B both apply but I just can't bear to sell my Spider 5K because of the quad Machine Guns, even though my K/D is 20/45.

Favorite two spider builds.
- Gauss Spider (challenging since it requires an XL engine, and armor stripped completely from the non-weapon side's arm and shoulder)
- AC-2 + UAC-5 Spider (Lots of insane fun. Had 6 mechs RUNNING from me and scrambling down between buildings in River City to try and find some cover. I'm serious! Running! From a spider! O_O! Funniest thing EVER!)
