(ask the devs 35)
SerEdvard: Any plans to buff Single Heat Sinks? For example, SHS could have lower dissipation rate but higher heat threshold, whereas DHS would have higher dissipation but lower heat threshold.
A: They will be under review again before we launch Clans.

because there will be no fixes to SHS/DHS untill at least fall, we need a quick dirty stop gap way to fix SHS. (the core of almost every current balance issue basically comes down to DHS being way too good as it is now)
this is not my vision of an optimal fix/balance, but it fits the game perfectly as it is now

give ALL engine heat sinks 2 heat dissipation.

benefits:
-no need to spend 1.5 mil just to make a newly purchased mech viable
-better new-player experience because trial mechs will no longer be deathly oven death traps
-lets SHS be slightly useful for builds with some space issues
-changes nothing with current game tempo, simply evening the playing fields, thus no need to spend 6 weeks "investigating" the change and how it will break things.
-wont break any current mechs

this is how the game currently plays. even the field

drawbacks:
-some people (such as me) will be out 1.5 million bucks (per mech) because we run reasonable builds, but only wanted to be competitive in combat
-even if something breaks, its still better to have a more balanced game, than the broke *** **** we have now

i could make this change right here, right now. no personnel time necessary. just change "pointmultiplier from 1.0 to 2.0. bam, done. and if they are feeling generous, they can even lower the cost of the DHS upgrade to account for the loss in relative power.

Quote

</UpgradeType>
-<UpgradeType name="StandardHeatSinkType" id="3003"> <Loc iconTag="20" descTag="@StandardHeatSinkType_desc" nameTag="@StandardHeatSinkType"/> <UpgradeTypeStats type="2" slots="0&quo"]pointMultiplier[/u] ="1.0" associatedItem="3000"/>

and because PGI apparently only watches "tends", and dosnt give a damn what we say, get out there and start making threads about how broken and unfair the current SHS/DHS state is. see if we can force them to take the 1 min it takes to give a little balance to the new players

EDIT: OH DAMN, i forgot to give this topic a more inflammatory title to attract forum user attention. better luck next time it seems

Yeah, don't even start heat related threads right now.

It's Machine Gun Season.

Something needs to be done. I propose the removal of the "Double Heat Sink Upgrade", engine intrinsic heat sinks be 1.5 EHS, SHS remain unchanged, DHS be improved to 2.0 EHS, and allowance of SHS and DHS mixing to enabled.

well the whole point was that PGI said they are not going to look at SHS until the clans (which looks like fall). it seems like anything more than this simple change is out of the question until then. I am hoping beyond all hope that some one smart on the team realizes the huge and pointless imbalance, and does this quick dirty and imperfect fix. but its still better than what we have now.
