I'm also surprised there is nothing in that torso area. I am still pleased with the mech, though. What armaments do you have?
I am using 2xLL, 1xSL, 1xUAC5, 1xAC5, 2xLRM5, 1 Jump-Jet (just for clearing obstacles, etc.), STD300 with 15 DHS and Endo. I find this is very suited to my style of play. I might go to 2xAC5 because of the constant jamming, or macro my mouse. Even without doing that, I find it is a very effective brawling mech with a bit of maneuverability that the Atlas lacks, and ballistics that are far easier to aim (being on the arm instead of torso.)
I considered going back to XL so I wrote down how often I had a side torso blown up before the CT, and it was surprising -- out of 17 matches I died 8 times, and 6 of those times, a side torso was blown up before my CT. The mech definitely has some "zombie" capability and can take a lot of punishment, and attracts attention from enemies. Therefore, I decided I do not want an XL engine on it. The torsos are huge, like an Atlas; and I am not convinced the extra armaments I could carry by going to XL would help enough to off-set it. I'm not convinced it isn't, but ... this setup is working well for me right now.

I hope they don't do that, but those of us who bought a Heavy Metal should not expect it to be superior (or necessarily, even equal) to the other variants. It is not supposed to be a "Pay 2 Win" game, after all.
I am more afraid of the QQing if the other variants are substantially inferior to the HM!

It destroys all mechs because it has loudspeakers announcing that you just blew someone up. Never had so much fun blowing things up in my entire life.
I have to say I am liking that a lot more than I thought I would. It is almost worth having to fight in a Mech that looks like it is in drag.
Counting the days till we can change colors on hero mechs...

Not even close. 1, my HM carries MUCH more firepower than a CTF can carry without being stripped to a skeleton, 2. It does it with JJ, 3. It does it with 544 armor (REALLY wanna see a cat with that), 4. It does ALL this at 60 KPH. Stop trying to compare HM to a cataphract, cause NOT ONE can face my HM head on without getting cored before my armor is even off.
PS. If you wanna know my loadout, I have posted it MULTIPLE times for other people who havent put the time in to MAKE it work out.

Not a bad loadout there, but I think you should try the XL before your discount it. It gives you more economic space usage, with good torso twisting and maintaining some distance (200-400m), if your aim is good, you can get some NICE damage out, lots of kills due to the MASSIVE firepower you can carry around. Check my build ourt, 60 damage rating...on par with atlas' and I outbrawl them regularly. I definetly think XL is the way to go with highlanders.
OOOOOO! And the torso twist is SOOOOO much faster! maneuvering with the 330XL is SICK! That with JJ means no lights eating my back before i turn and swat them for their insolence!

Doubtful. The Heavy Metal is just a -732 with an extra medium laser and minor hardpoint adjustments. (SRM moved from LA to LT, mediums moved from RT to LA.)
The -733 is essentially identical to the -732 except that it carries an AC/10 instead of a Gauss Rifle.
The -733C replaces the -733's AC/10 with an AC/20.
The -733P replaces the -733's AC/10 with a PPC.
So in all but one case, you're looking at a pair of PPCs and a Gauss Rifle on your jump sniper. The exception is the -733P which will carry 3 PPCs and no Gauss.
PGI is going to have to do some serious hardpoint manipulation to make the Highlanders interesting.
