There is no other weapon in the game with a higher opportunity cost.

The MG is so ineffective that for its wieght/crits it is ALWAYS inferior to alternatives.

Putting MG's on a mech robs that mech of 1.5 tons and 2 slots.

There is not a config (that is not hardpoint limited) which can not be improved by the use of 1.5 tons and/or 2 slots in other aspects of the mech.

A Small laser and one single heatsink is FAR superior damage and utilty wise then a MG. 1.5 tons of armor is far superior to a MG, BAP is far superior to MG (That is saying something), AMS and one ton of ammo are far superior to a MG.

There is not one config with MG's that can be concocted which can not be made better by foregoing the MG's.

I want to use MG's, I love the look of them in game, but there is not a single build in my stable which is better with them.

Well said. Even if the MG were useful alone, the issue of opportunity cost is what really consigns it to the dustbin.

I think it might be the only item in game that the more tonnage you devote to it, the worse off your mech is.

I would rather take a BAP than an MG. I even think I will do more damage.

You can make an argument that a MG has minor utility as a crit buffer. SO LONG AS YOU DO NOT ACTUALLY LOAD IT WITH AMMO, also you need to have no open energy slots.

A Machine gun is a superior crit buffer in that it takes up one slot for 0.5 tons.

So given tonnage isnt a problem, you have no free energy slots, and a desire to buffer a section against crits. You can equip an empty MG and it is marginally superior to loading gauss rifle ammo (presuming your mech does not have a gauss rifle loaded) however it is still strictly inferior to a small laser if one is possible to equip, it is also strictly inferior to simply placing 0.5 tons more armor on the section.

We have to consolidate all the threads on Machine Gun feedback because there's too many of them at present. Please continue here.
