In past Battletech and clone incarnations, there has been an ability to move the target reticle with a thumb-operated hat button on a joystick, separate from the legs and torso orientation. This provides a 3rd degree of motion, allowing for advanced targeting techiques for skilled pilots.

Not sure about you but my joystick hat responds digitally, not analog, so it acts as a keypress either on or off. For me it wouldn't be practical aiming this way due to the joystick.
