In light of the latest Ask the Devs response on MGs I decided to take my 5k out for a spin, this was my setup SDR-5K.
As LRM boats tend to be fairly rare I was mostly concerned about running into other lights. My first match I dropped on Alpine, not a great map for quad MGs but the SDR platform has the speed to close most gaps so I wasn't too worried. Luck would have it that a stalker has been left behind to guard the enemy base, a more perfect situation for the 5k there could not be. I was running with a 3L and we slowly stripped the armor and I disabled his weapons. At some point during this dance the 3L gets taken out by the stalker so I am left to deal with him. I finally disable the last of his weapons, his CT is orange and I run out of ammo. He is still mobile so he slowly lumbers toward his team while a pound his CT with my LPL. By the time I actually kill him, he has caught up with the rest of his team and I am quickly dispatched by the nearest Jager.
Every other SDR variant would have made rather quick work of that stalker, something needs to change with regard to MGs, I shouldn't have to use all of my ammo on a single enemy. The next few matches I was less lucky and averaged around 150 damage. For comparison I usually do 300-500 damage in my 5D.

MGs in their current state are a placebo weapon. You get visual feedback of shells, you hear loud machingun fire, but in terms of damage you do as much as the kid playing next to his dad with a disconnected controller. When the enemy dies you assume you must have done damage to him. Indeed, you have, with your Laser.
