If you bought your MC at 2x value, then it's only $10-15 instead. A lot of people would do that.
PGI's real power-buyers (the ones that bought the Heavy Metal) at full price aren't likely to wait for such sales, but a lot of people could only afford these things ON these sales. That's why F2P pricing is as it is.
Come on PGI. Give us a real sale for the 4th. No more of this "20% off top tier packages only" stuff.

30-35 dollars! I could buy whole games with that.
And yet I see plenty of them on the battlefield; actually it's rare to have a game without at least one.
While there is a decent % of people out there that are willing to spend $30+ on a single mech, PGI will keep charging that - as they should.

Your opinion - I'll keep shooting people in the face with it.
Whether you buy something or not is as always a personal choice but complaining about the price is the least effective way to get it to change. What works is not buying it - if the price is out of line with the market it will change. So really you're already doing what needs to be done already. If they change the price then you were right. If it stays the same then you are not inline with the market.

It's Rhonda Snord's personal mech. She's the commander of Snord's Irregulars - a merc unit spun off of the Wolf's Dragoons noted for their interest in history. It's supposed to be pink with loud speakers that would be blaring Elvis. Obviously the Elvis wouldn't fly (just imagine the licensing fee!) but otherwise this rendition is spot on.

Art from the card game:

EDIT: Looking at classic Battletech art makes me feel sad for the past. We're so spoiled with the amazing mecha art of MWO.

It plays music when you get a kill, die, or win a match. Sometimes - it bugs occasionally or you just can't hear it. You can see the speakers on PGI's version (they're square instead of round).

Some of that is new mechitis. I expect that numbers will drop over time though we will see a massive number of standard Highlanders soon.

See them all over though. Tons of people did buy them, it's rare to drop in a match that doesn't have at least one Heavy Metal if not a couple on each side.
We'll see what happens with the next hero mech though. All the people with low impulse control and minimal patience bought the mech and now can't even get speed tweak or any of the Elite perks for 2 weeks after they bought it. What we'll probably see is a correspondingly small response to the next hero mech as all the impatient folks are getting taught to associate buying a hero mech for a huge pile of money with a corresponding sense of frustration.
Or not. We'll see. Taken in and of itself though the Heavy Metal clearly sold like an SOB.

ARMA2 and now ARMA3 is how well cull the slow and the weak from the FPS herd. Every single other military based FPS is crap compared to ARMA 2 and even in alpha ARMA 3. Shallow, simplified, watered down CRAP compared to the ARMA series. Especially when properly modded up ARMA 2 is even now superior to every single milisim on the market by such a wide degree that it's not sporting to compare them.
Also I don't consider 'AAA' titles to be all that good 9 times out of 10. Dragon Age 2, SimCity, Diablo 3 multiplayer, it's a long list. Star Citizen isn't even in Alpha yet and it's better than anything EA has released in the last few years.

There is nothing wrong with them releasing it before the regular Highlanders. This was smart on the devs part. As for your prediction of the future I think you are way off. Not being able to get elite for a couple weeks is meaningless when you can save up xp and master it out the second you get the other 2 regular ones lvled up a bit. It is a non issue. What we will probably see is all hero mechs being released this way in the future, and I am all for it.
