When LRM's are back in as a functional weapon system, long range direct fire weapons will recede slightly in popularity. Right now, their natural predator has been removed from the mech-ecosystem, and we're seeing the result.
The long range sniper is actually the natural predator of the LRM boat, I can hit you, harder, and get back under cover WELL before your missiles get to me. In closed beta you would bring K2s then run around looking for LRM boats to blast.
With ECM the LRM boats largely vanished, and the dual gauss was nerfed into the floor (you are kind of silly to torso mount a guass now) so the long range builds went away in favor of crushing short range brawlers (D-DC, A1s, various phracs etc.)
Now LRMs is trash, AND heavy energy is usable, amplified by builds like cent bombs and A1s getting their teeth pulled. Couple that with two BIG maps in high rotation.
No kidding large lasers, PPCs, and guass are making a comeback. Running a short range assault means you are going to be chasing the fight 70% of most games.
