I like using the training grounds to learn maps. I find it useful for Tourmaline, River City, Frozen City. I like finding where snipers might tend to hang out, lines of sight, how to get from point A to point B.

I also drop on training grounds in any mech I modify - set weapon groups, test them out, make sure they are OK.

I generally like it, but I wish I could specify which map to drop into, and, the pilot tree stuff doesn't apply. My max speed doesn't have the speed tweak, torso twist, turning are slower than when dropping in live matches. If the pilot skill effects were available for use on training grounds, I would find it even more useful than today.

Agreed on a few other posts - I'd rather have targets wandering around a bit, MORE targets that aren't so spread out on the big maps, but I'm meh on them returning fire.

Pretty much only if I'm not sure how I want to group the weapons. Obviously it would be more useful if the mechs didn't rock standard armor.

I don't think the AI is necessary, but the option to select -MY- custom mechs to put into it to shoot would be great instead of the default stock configs. Make it a premium feature or something~

I use the training grounds more than I play matches. It's more satisfying.

Not a new player, I've used the training grounds a couple times to work on getting a feel for a few things with weapons. Mostly off set elevation shots at close range and that sort of thing aka how close can you be to an atlas on a hill and still headshot it as a light.

I tried the training grounds as a new player. For the most part, it felt kinda pointless.

CB player, wish I had it when I started... Use it load out change and every time I get a new machine. Also use it to try new techniques I have seen others use while spectating. Anyone not using it is way too cocky/naive. You don't have to use it a lot, but ignoring it is also wasteful.

Toggle switch on/off for live fire would be great... being able to pick and design your own enemies would be epic (ie 2 bots vs yourself with customer loadouts - ones that a real player would use for instance)

I believe this is a planned feature of the testing grounds, the thing we have now that everyone is calling the training grounds for some reason even though it doesn't even pretend to have anything to do with training.

We don't know much about the Upcoming-but-not-yet-implemented-in-game "Training Grounds". But IIRC a dev did say that there would be AI controled mechs, it would be scripted, etc.

It would appear that the "training grounds" is improperly named. Based on this feedback, it is more of a testing grounds for veteran players.

New players dont even seem to be using it.

I don't really use the testing grounds much at all. I find that setting up weapon groups and checking how much heat a given group generates is fast and easy enough to do in the first few seconds of a match. Therefore, I don't typically see much point in taking extra time just to drop into the testing environment. It usually only takes me 1 or 2 shots to get a feel for heat generation of a new build.

The one time I did spend a good chunk of time in the testing ground was when I fitted my Atlas RS with 2 ER PPCs. I used to have it with 4 PPCs, but decided to go 2 ER and 2 normal. I spent some time in the testing ground to figure out exactly how much heat each group of PPCs generated and what percentage I had to wait for my heat to drop down to to fire either group without overheating.

how would a new player know it even exists? imho this is a major problem... there is no way for new players to get even the most basic info

I use TG when I build a new mech to set weapon groups and check heat. Since I often get the new desert map this is a far better way to test a new mech than taking an untested design into combat only to find out it runs too hot or has the wrong type of ammo loaded due to weapon changes.

Obviously not a new player here.

I use it frequently to judge weapon grouping and arrangement.

My testing ground usage usually goes:

Are you sure you want to launch Testing Grounds?

*yes*

[Loading Tourmaline Desert]

*quit match*

I tend to use the grounds to test new weapons or Mechs before I actually commit to going groundside.

Found it useful to test the effective range/spread of SRM racks (one of my current Mechs is an SRM Centurion), how to group weapons based on position/heat/range, and familiarity with weak points of certain Mechs. Otherwise, I get to test the theory of Mechs I think sound good when I write them in Smurfy, then see how it holds in practice.
