I know what the DEV's said in the Q&A so my suggestion is to have a unit insignia maker built into the game. Controling the different elements of the insignia that we "pick from" will handle the copyright and "inappropriate" content aspects of the problem.
Also it solves to issue we had in games like Tribes where if you didn't have a custom paint job D/L'ed you could not see it. Other games have incorperated this aspect of guild creation into them, it's nothing new. I think the two main questions are:
1. How difficult is it to incorperate into the game?
2. If it was added to the game would it be seen?
2a. By this I mean, is the only place you would see it, the battlefield?
2b. Or are there other aspects of the game outside of battle we have not seen?
2c. If the battlefield is the only place to see it, then I think it is not worth the effort it would take to add to the game and maybe custom paint jobs is the way to go to give people controle over making their mech their own.
Unit Insignias: I know the Q&A answer, but....

They've said that they're (justifiably) concerned about copyright issues.
Personally, I think the ability to create a unit insignia (which would require review on their part) should go into the category of "things people should pay for separately".

An insignia creation tool does solve some of the issues with user-made-images, and a report function to report inappropriate use of the in-game insignia maker will solve the rest of the issues (I guarantee you someone will make a wang in any insignia creation ever made)
The only problem with such a tool is, it's taking time/effort that they need to be devoting to core gameplay. Would be a great idea for later on.
Would probably still come with a price tag (for example, you could purchase a 'blank' decal in the cash store and apply your custom logo to the blank you purchased)

you just can put some pre-made symbols in, that can be combined with each other in different ways...it doesn´t have to be a "from the scratch" symbol designtool like APB has...

That's what I was thinking. Pre-made symbols, colors, ect.. is what I ment by "elements".

So something like CoD black ops had? I actually like using the things they gave you to try and make new designs. It made you think: how can I layer this so that you only see this part of the shape? And it was easy to use.
