Theres alot of things in game already that causes smoke.
You got smoke from the artillery/airstrikes. (btw you don't see much complaints about these cause people dont use them)
You get smoke from jump jets. If you spam the jets you can get a little cloud too.
If PPCs hit a surface it lets out smoke too. So having weapons that cause smoke is nothing new.
You get steam from having heat sinks in water.
Flamers are intended to cause smoke. Where theres smoke theres fire, where there is fire you really ought to have smoke.
Give Flamers smoke/steam with a good decent mech size coverage, thickness with a decent life-span.
This could be useful when running across a exposed area to hide movements, Also allow you to cover your retreats.
I think in the TT they even had some scout mechs that specialized like Firestarter scout, it would basicly use the flamers to prevent being followed.

If you had smoke bombs it would be a grenade thrown......would land then boom smoke.
Make Flamers the smoke-beam weapon. You shoot it where it hits BOOM smoke.
We already have weapons that DO this, but flamers above all other weapons currently in are used in too cause this specificly.

flame as itself doesnt necessarily produce smoke
but if you set something aflame (like terrain) hell yea... that would be interesting to obscure vision by setting map aflame
though i believe it still would make sensor able to pickup IFF through fire (unless ecm that is
)

If the flamers produced smoke, they'd be even MORE blinding when you're torching someone's face.
Dial back the fire and compensate it with smoke?

Dial back what exactly? Got the shortest range in game........ lowest damage right behind machine guns...... Doesn't heat up mechs..... Doesn't have any crit special......
I'll take flamer half damage for ability to smoke anyday..... point .02 damage or whatever..........its almost a joke. Sure
Lets let it make buildings catch on fire and you can nerf the damage X 100.
The OTHER WEAPONS.....GOT smoke and are doing this stuff already...... Did PPCs have to dial down for thier smoke when they hit stuff?
On the give and take scheme of it all...........We "owe" flamers and MGs. If we nerf those weapons even more they'd start to heal the enemy mechs. Fact you can equip flamers walk up to a mech and YOUR going to shut down before it does. If you nerf it any more might as well have it shut down friendly mechs too.
