bought the wrong mech the other night.. (note to self, no shopping when vodka is involved) so now i have to earn another 3m c-bills..
(only heavy i played was the trial dragon) Mainly my first weekend playing all i did was play the trial mech so i wanna try something new this weekend. I always loved the catapults, but those Jagers and those AC's seem like a lotta fun. ,
Perhaps you guys can give me some things to think about while i earn another 3m c-bills for my next mech purchase..
Dragons in general are perhaps the most challenging heavies to use. They work best as confused "Lights." They have difficulty handling themselves in brawls, and without speed they do not stand a chance against assaults without a skillful pilot and a sleeve full of tricks. Cannon-shell swatting helps, but their arms are so hard to control that it is not a reliable technique.
Default Fang (Dragon hero) versus PPC / UAC-5 Fang. I'm in the default; that's default everything including STD heatsinks.
Two experienced dragon pilots trying out the 5N[Champion] trial mech for the first time.
The Catapult was my first decent mech. I'm actually quite proud of it. However many of them feel unnecessarily weak with the current state of missiles. I think if you do go for one, it would have to be the k2. The catapult is a proud, strong machine. It thrives on XL engines, and its presence is feared on the battlefield. Sadly I have so many good vids from the Catapults I'm not sure what ones to even reference.
The ever frightful AC-20 Catapult. Kon style.
The unlikely victor -- a rare if ever seen build that performs rather well.
Catapults are fun to dance in.
Spoiler
Jagers can be fun however I've tried the default rigs and they are not fun. A spider has more armor than it does! I'm dead serious. Never go with the default rig.
That said, the Jager can be fearsome. While not able to take the abuse of a Catapult, it can match the speed or in the case of the AC-20 build, surpass it. With arm mounts it is able to fire up and down, making its ballistics more useful than those of the Catapult. The JM6-A can even fulfill the same roles as the Catapult C4. However, using its armaments to its full extent it can never carry as many missiles as the Catapult C4.
Default rig video. JM6-A. The only time I've done halfway decent with it.
My personal favorite rig with the JM6-S. Keep in mind I do not recommend this for just anyone or for new players.

That was a kickass post. Dont forget about cataphracts, probably the strongest heavy right now. 3D is a beast of a mech.
Thank you.
Knew I forgot something. Though honestly I wouldn't want to subscribe a newer player to that so early. With their abilities comes a lot of weaknesses.
However if one must look at them, I believe I said it best here and in the many posts of that thread.
I have a few better pics somewhere, but I can't find them. I may have Lordred take new snapshots of my current ones.
As a new player whom has been following under the guidance of Kon, I too don't want to recommend any of the cataphracts to new players. Their torsos are so big (the CT is the biggest which is quite annoying) and that most of the hard points are spread around making it hard to effectively group the weapons.
The cataphracts are not brawlers. Too wide and easily able to be cores out, they are often more like support mechs.
I also forgot o mention that its arms are rather low so it's hard to fight in by terrain battles. You need to expose most of you body in order to shoot and damage.

Keep in mind that Turret like mechs don't have elevation problems .
Saying that Catapult,Jagermech and Stalker are better ton for ton .
I think it's a pun on the ton system. Instead of pound for pound. It's like "Okay here's an apple, here's an orange.. Sure they weigh about the same, but the apple tastes smoother and doesn't have an aftertaste, so it's better."

BULLSH*T
Oranges are much better than your filthy apples... You peasant!
Cataphract 3D is good, Jagermechs with AC/20s are absolutely amazing, and the Catapult is really solid. If you want a good cheap build that's a change of pace from the Dragon, a K2 with 2 AC/20s is one of the best close-range fighters at the moment and is dirt cheap.
can only speak on jagers and catapults, i owned one dragon and stripped it, sold it. for some of the reasons koniving mentioned above.
the catapults left me disappointed. i still own them and will return to them because i know they can be toyed with lots of ways and i'm still learning stuff.
i'm having a hard time lvling my jagers but they've been fun. i just feel like right now missiles kinda suck and the catapults are missile leaning mechs like the jagers are ballistic heavy. i just find i'm doing more dmg with ballistics right now plain and simple. and damage is fun.
plus LRMs really need some teamwork and active spotters. i spectate so often on people who don't hit R. I think "Why would you NOT want to know if and where your enemy is vulnerable??? HIT R for crying out loud!!!"
ok, I know this is a silly question, But how do you increase the armor? I would think you could add+ subract some how.. but so far i have not figured out how.
(Perhaps that is why some mechs act like they are harder to kill than others)
I'm really consitering the cat.. I recall back in mech 3, I had this really nice cat with missles, and PPC's. It was sorta a psuedo madcat. I'm really consitering getting it. Besides at times i really wish i had a stack of LRM's..
Now time to make more money, i decided to mod up my hunchbacks and put off getting a heavy for the weekend and that took all my c-bills..

thanks for the vids!
Go to the armor tab in the mechalab and click the arrows next to the numbers up or down to add and remove armor.
The front and rear sections of your mech share armor totals. So if you center torso can have 80 armor, you could put 60 front and 20 rear, 50 front 30 rear, or any combination up to a total of 80.
This is going to be edited later to include more, but thought I'd share a pic real quick.

Ohh, So there is a shared max??? You can't use up tonnage to add extra armor? I was hoping i could spare a few tons and add armor to certain mechs..
after looking at more info.. It is looking like cat's are more manuverable and can use jump-jets looking to take attacks of oppertunity..
jaeg's less manuverable, perhaps heavier and more firepower?
