Why am I applying 19 patches (that'll tell you how long I've been AWOL) and getting ready to play again? Summary of great reasons to be back or not would be great

Hot Pink Highlander. More than enough reason to come back.

I swear we get as many coming back threads as quitting threads. I think they cancel out

More than, I think. People who are actually quitting rarely post about it, they just go do something else.
Anyways, there's all sorts of new stuff. If you're applying 16 patches, there's a ton of new content and gameplay polish to see.
Two (fully) new maps, lots of new mech types and hero mechs, new end-of-round and start of round screens which really do add a lot to what we had before.
People will wail about balance, but that always happens. It's really not bad right now, despite the game having moved to a more ranged/direct fire meta instead of ranged w/ missile or brawling.
Missile hardpoints are now the weakest, instead of being the strongest, hardpoints, but not by such a huge margin as people like to make out. They're about as much weaker than ballistic/energy hardpoints as they were stronger before.
All in all, the game is doing well, and growing regularly. We'll be seeing 12v12 inside a month, and the rest of the Highlander variants in 2 days.
