I've been using the Beagle Active Probe + Advanced Sensor Range *2 + Seismic and I find that with an xl300 jenner I can find where the enemy very early in the game. Either I find a whole lot of red targets or noone at all, which means ecm. You can tell what direction the game is going to go just by this alone. And the fact that you have high speed means that you can bug out or rush because you should hopefully see the enemy a kilo away.
Question is, is the information gathering module worth it? I haven't had enough points to get it yet, but it seems like a perfect fit for being a scout role.

If you have one more spot available, then take cap accelerator. I wouldn't worry so much about target info module for now. It speeds up the info gathering, but you should be able to get that by simply holding one target longer. Also, if you run streaks, you may want to get target decay.

if you're scouting then the advanced sensor range is better than info gathering.
for general combat purposes, target info gathering is better (as a general rule i run this and seismic on every mech)
if you're running an LRM boat then you'll want both as both Artemis and BAP bonuses stack with Target info gathering, and the sensor range helps you find your targets faster if you don't have a spotter. if you have a 3rd or 4th module slot after that then you'll also want Target Decay Target to keep your lock for a couple seconds if they break Line of Sight. Info gathering also helps with SSRM lock on times.

Targeting info is very useful for lights in a fight. When you have a very short time window to aim your weapons, faster info means many more easy shots. It is less of a scouting tool, though. I would recommend Target Decay instead.

Info gathering is mostly for combat. It will let you know what part of the enemy is weak so you can shoot them there sooner or maybe find out what weapons an enemy has so you know if you should stay far or stick close. It's not really for scouting. Target retention, 360 target, or cap acceleration are better for scouts.
If you do not mind the cost, the UAV is probably good too.
