I think what you guys are misinterpreting is that it isn't bias, I think what your reading is more of a disappointment. A lot of their readers and forum members were asking for that AMD build so they complied. Sadly, AMD just really doesn't seem to be interested in the race anymore, won't, or can't.

MaximumPC is all about balls out PC builds. They don't get enthused about half measures concerning performance. Since the Core 2 Duo days, it has been all Intel, with very little to write about from AMD from most sites. Very little interesting outside of their GPU lines, and that has more to do with the ATI side of the house, that has been noteworthy of AMD. Trust me, if both companies were neck and neck again, all the tech sites would be a buzz.

I've met the writer of the article many times throughout the years, and while Josh is only an acquaintance, the talks I've had with him have left me with a high level of respect for him and the work he does, I've found him in no way bias, just a true enthusiast.

well if you do say so then i have nothing to say
but they need to level the playing field if they were to make a fair comparision

throwing the AMD right into a battle with the Intel i7 Extreme is too much

using the engine reference

the AMD is like a Toyota TRD 4AGE 20V Silvertop running at 12,000rpm with 240bhp

and the Intel i7 Extreme is like a Nissan RB26DETT engine

yes AMD love speed so thats why i compare it to the high reving 4AGE and Intel i7 extreme is like a inline 6 of the RB engine

while both may be racing engines but there is a huge difference between the 2 engines

and the graphics card are like your force induction

AMD is using the HD7970 which is like a supercharger but the Geforce GTX 690 is akin to twin HKS GT1000 turbos

so yea 2 different engines with 2 different form of force induction

there is no way you can compare them!

So you have nothing to say........But then your going to say something. would you make up your mind.

I keep trying to explain that this isn't a head-to-head comparison. Maximum PC uses baseline rigs merely as a way to set the 0 mark on the scale. Every couple of years they build a system by which all others are to can be judged. As the years progress you'll notice systems begin beating then downright trouncing the 0 point machine. Then eventually as a new architecture is rolled out they'll pick a new 0 point build. They just recently updated this one back in February.

Maximum PC Benchmarks Explained
http://www.maximumpc..._benchmarks2012

And this is MaximumPC where price to performance isn't really weighed, only the "top performance" so for their category they're right, right now there is no point in buying an AMD system.

Would I buy a 7970 right now, maybe, but with an unlimited budget, I'd rather pick a trio of Titans or 3x GTX690s. Or a trio of Maltas' when they become available.

hmmm.,..... I could put them on a dynometer and "benchmark" them........I'm pretty sure that is a widely practiced standard by which the automotive industries rate engines.

1. Build ~$800 AMD system.

2. Compare to ~$2000 Intel setup.

3. Benchmark old games.

4x the price, 1/3 less performance.

Intel is better! Just.. not for your wallet.

You could put 2x GTX 680 with 1866DDR3 on FX-8320 and proclaim that the 8350 disappoints.

Where's Cryengine 3? Where's screen resolution? Terrible benchmarks.

Strike 1: The case has very little air flow with only the two fans and being cramped with all those heavy parts. You should really use a full tower or a some what big mid tower with atleast 4 120mm fans

Strike 2: The graphic card you picked is not the best choice on the market. I would change the gpu to a PowerColor 7970 since it will take less room and still give you great ocing performace.

Strike 3: The build you used against the amd rig was flat out unfair. The Vishera chip is on pair with the first gen icore and when overclocked is supposed to match (some) sandy chips.

You made it sound like you were going all out with amd but when you really get down in to it, it was full of holes. I don't know why max-pc mag has so many problems with amd.

PS. To anyone that doesn't know, Corsair isn't built by seasonic anymore but cwt the same company that buildes thermaltake psu.

I won't say it was dishonest for them to mention their "zero point" machine, but the comment was definitely stupid on their part.

It's like

What I'll also note is that it was hardly the "ultimate" AMD machine. Why not triple 7970s? And if $500+ CPUs are suddenly fair game, why not a high clocked 12 core Opteron (maybe a 6344)? The dishonesty came in presenting this as AMD's best spare-no-expense machine, and it really falls short of that.

The other thing I'll note is that while their CPU benchmarks and 3d synthetic benchmarks are *okay*, MPC has a habit of picking bizarre games to test that don't represent the real world.

we are not the only one who are blasting MPC for such a poor AMD build

the comments given by fellow builders from their own community are blasting them like twin AC20s to the face

Perhaps, in a few more years when you are ready, we can have a mature discussion on what a real HPC system is all about.

What about the guy with $10k race car that runs 10's? Had a buddy that had a H20 powered DX that ran low 10's, he would strut his stuff when the Z06, Ford GT, and $100k+ guys were around, but at the end of the day its still a Civic.

S!

I run now an AMD based system, quite the same as in the article with some differences. I use Asus Sabretooth R2.0 Gen3 motherboard that has PCIe 3.0 support now etc. Memory is 16Gb Corsair Vengeance DDR3 at 1866MHz and GPU is Club3D 7970HD GHz Edition. Can not really badmouth this setup, it runs my games above 60fps at 1920x1080.

I agree with a poster above that it really is matter of price vs gain you get. Seems just that people get bogged down in fanboy trenches resulting in nothing else than flame wars. Not all run their games with ridiculous amount of FSAA or AF or whatever dingel dangel there is. Not everyone is the "l33t pr0", they are merely a fraction of gamers.

AMD vs Intel is competition is favoring Intel in most of areas except pricing. Just take BEST Intel LGA2011 with top components vs AMD FX8350 with top components and you see the difference right there. Anyways..happy gaming everyone whatever rig you might use :D

I don't get why MPC is comparing the systems they did there, especially a 7970 to a 690.... They should have at least did a 7990 if they were going to go that route.

The FX 8350 8 core CPU's AMD offers hold their own. In several games I play the benchmarks keep up or surpass the intel's in the same price bracket; 3570k, 3770k is a little more for next to no advantage, 3930 is in another ballpark, you need a more expensive motherboard on top of a lot higher price for the CPU.

Most of the time the performance difference is negligible. The performance will be so close you wouldn't be able to tell the difference in most cases.

The only issue with ATI graphics cards is they have been ignoring smoothness/stuttering which the driver team has been working hard to eliminate recently.
