Great idea, this is something that should be included.

Including a big button and an encyclopedia is a week work at max for one competent flash developer, especially since most of the material can be copy pasted.

While I agree that more lore should be built into the game, and this is one way to do it & bump up player immersion, I see no Catalyst Games and Topps partnership logos associated with MWO unless you are seeing something I'm not.

It seems like it would take awhile to work with those (current BT fluff) copyright holders indirectly on what they can copy and paste. Expecting a week's turnaround on such a project, even with those partnership agreements in place, sounds vastly unrealistic to me (ie. setting yourself up for disappointment when expectations are not met).

Anyone want to put together a mock-up / demo site in the meantime?

Bioware does a great job in most of their games at including a "codex" or equivalent that has all manner of setting info. I'd love to see a sort of meta-game in MWO where as you encounter maps, mechs, weapons, and such your codex gets updated with information about those things. Killed by a PPC? Your codex updates with info about the PPC. Murder a Liao pilot? Your codex updates with info about the CapCon.

I think doing it with unlocks would encourage people actually to look at the thing. Just having it there gives no incentive. Making it a prize (even if there were no tangible rewards) would give people just that little bit of a push to go and look at what they just earned. Even better would be a small GXP reward for each codex unlock (like, say, 10 GXP per entry). Not game breaking, but enough that all kinds of players would be compelled to open up each and every codex entry.

they just see robots dropping on planets over and over.

This is a direct result of the current metagame and will pass when the poptarts have all been shot down :)

More seriously: I support the OPs idea 100%

Maybe PGI can just buy Sarna or have some kind of arrangement with them.

I think this would work well with CW and the Achievements system.

Such as first time you are on a new planet in CW, it can add a blurb about the planet to your Journal / Codex thingie, too.
