I have a mouse with more than 5 buttons. I got it with this game in mind, although it can be used for others. Why is it not possible to map any buttons above 5? This is a bit ridiculous. It's should be a relatively simple matter and would make the game controls a lot more fun.

Edit: even the mouse wheel should be remappable. No reason to prohibit any button remapping.

Agreed. A game shouldn't ever constrain mappings. If I want to connect a joystick and use x+ as fire weapon group 1, x- as use jump jets, and y+/- as turn, it should let me. Anything less than complete freedom applies needless constraints that will inevitably burn people with oddball hardware or special physical needs.

Also, I'd really like to use an xbox 360 controller in my left hand for analog throttle and turning, and a mouse in my right hand for precision aiming.
