No you don't, the elite perks or any exp and unlock perks will stay with the mech. You will just be unable to spend the xp on the mech till you buy the mech again.

You'll regret it. Buying a mech is the same as driving a car off the lot. You INSTANTLY lose a huge chunk of the value, and heaven help you if you want it back...

Actually, a follow up n00b question...
To actually unlock the elite skills do you need all variants still in the "garage" or can you get rid of one? I'm sitting on a mech I hate just in case, despite the fact I'm sure I read it was OK.

you cannot unlock any skills for a mech you don't currently own, even if you have the xp for it

If you have elites unlock for 3 other heavies, you should be ok. But still, id just hang on to what you have until you master the mech you want.

To unlock elite for say a hunchback, you need 8/8 basic unlocked on 3 variants Once you have 8/8 on three it doesn't matter if you sell on or two you can get start purchasing elite bonuses with xp on any of them as long as you own them. BUT! if you don't have all three, you can't get 4/4 elite with all three to unlock the Master bonus, which only gives you an extra module slot so it's up to you.

Also make sure you take EVERYTHING off the mech before you sell it. Engine, ammo, weapons, MODULES(!), even the armor. They are all better off in your inventory then being sold.
