Before you ask, I'm not starting this thread because I'm getting killed by poptarts. I guess my ELO isn't high enough that I get to face the really good poptarts - the once I meet tend to take as much damage as they dish out each time they jump.

I'm wondering if people would like to see jump jets having some kind of automatic forward momentum. When I first started playing this game, poptarting didn't even enter my mind. I thought everyone would just be flying around, jumping across rooftops and flying sideways with guns blazing, Max Payne style.

Instead, people are forming a line behind a ridge, popping up and down like this:

In other words, I'm not complaining that poptarts are too effective. I just don't think it looks cool, and it can also lead to boring gameplay. I'm probably in the minority here, but I think jump jets could be modified to make this a more dynamic game, while right now they're making the game more static (except for Spiders, Jenners and the odd Trebuchet).

PS: Before people take me literally, I'm not suggesting that mechs should literally fly sideways while shooting their guns like Bruce Willis in Die Hard. I'm thinking more along the lines of this.

It wouldn't change anything. They would just backup after each jump.

I would like a forward boost if you're not already moving. That would be good.

Yeah except now they're sticking out in the open and have to readjust themselves. So that even more time between shots and more time to shoot them back.

I like jump jets largely the way the are. This proposed change would do nothing to affect pop-tarting. People would just compensate by moving back some. Once they land just reverse back to original spot while jets recharge again and replace.

Giving jump jets a directional component will cause even more problems for balance as then mechs will be to a degree fly-able. Being able to change course in air is not a perk I feel the jump jets need or deserve.

This is serious business and it needs a poll.

Considering the year at which the game takes place we should be able to move jumpjets like some planes do... jumpjets should be able to point to the following directions:

- left
- right
- forward
- up

Controlled by an alternative set of keys like numpad, if no direction is given then the mech should fly straight up if no other config has been applyed.

**edit***

One more thing, Jumpjets should heat LEGS to the point that they trigger ammo explotions in hot maps, this will have a dramatic effect in how ppl build their mechs.
******
My 2 cents.

Also using the same line of thought: Night vision && Heat Vision SUCKS MONKEY B*LLS !!
700 mts? really? this is a darn joke.

Why would they be in the open? They would just position so they would land behind cover. Such a thing would possibly make it easier for them to reposition. definitely harder to hit.

all this would do is have poptarters. move backwards first to gain back momentum before jump jetting so that the velocity vectors cancel out.

i'm afraid the best way to fix poptarting would be adding some jump jet shake while the JJs are firing.

with the reduction of ballistics fire delay, and the addition of ballistics state rewind. the poptarts are havin it good.

its not a huge issue right now. but i think its very borderline problematic.

Just so you know.. standing perfectly stationary, facing the ridge, and pressing the JJ key is really NOT the correct way to jumpsnipe.

It wouldn't worry me either way, I use jets to help scout or brawl, I have no personal interest in poptarting.

Well, on the bright side, it didn't get the "new and exciting" comment

Problem: Poptarts.
Solution: Toaster oven, taking the "pop" out of poptarts since poptarts were invented. ;) :D

It would be nice if jump jets behaved different for different mechs (e.g. gice the Spider some maneuverability)

Because it is New and Exciting ;) I mean that.

However, I'm disappointed that Bacon is behind all other votes combined. That's unAmerican.

People who stand still to pop are fools anyways, you would still get owned by the ones who can play.

What Team Leader said. Most people are hiding behind a ridge, or behind buildings. If they use Jump Jets with forward momentum, they'll suddenly be on the other side of the ridge or the building.

Just starting 50 meters further back wouldn't help on mountains, as 50 meters further back meets 20-50 meters lower down.

I'm not a fan of this, as it would just punish skilled players and introduce random luck.

You could give jump jets some kind of aim drift, that would introduce no random shaking and require a fair bit of skill to counter.

I've only seen one really good jumping sniper as long as I've played this game, who actually moved around on Caustic, even without cover, and tore people up. Like I said, it's probably because my ELO is too low. But I thought 'poptart' by definition was someone who stand still and jump up like a.... poptart.

I do believe that's how the majority of people do it too. Unless I'm further down the ELO ladder than I thought.

you can still aim and shoot when the jump jets are not firing during free fall etc. there is just a smaller window now to get nonshaky accurate fire.

more skill required

Yes it would, read my above post.
Um you mean light mechs like the spider, which are supposed to have advanced jumpjet directional systems, should stay just the way they are, flying in lazy easy to hit arcs.
