How does other intensive software behave? How does 3DMark, Unigine Heaven, Furmark, etc, behave? I'm just trying to rule out something like a dud PSU.
To cover another obvious base, are you running the latest Nvidia drivers? Up until the absolute latest release, there was a string of dud drivers, and if you look back over the last 5-10 pages, Nvidia-specific issues greatly outnumber AMD-specific issues right now (so again, this is just a bad batch of Nvidia drivers).
Once we've gotten some of that covered, we can look at more exotic fixes.

I hate to say it, but you might just be getting a few lucky drops. If not, though, and one mech is mysteriously able to be played with the game staying stable, that would narrow down the problem enormously. Keep it up and see if you can get frequent crashing with the atlas (obviously the game crashes occasionally on its own one way or the other)

my rig is a mix: amd x6 1100t@4.2 under waterbespoke loop, 2x 670 kfa oc 16 gig cors vengance 1866, ocz 1000w psu all in a ATCS 840 case monitor is 2560 x1440 hazro 27" . If i have any joy or epiphanys i'll post back. Atleast it's not just me

You can also try the grain removal fix; that's been claimed to alleviate bugs by quite a few people. I have it, but couldn't tell you for certain, because MWO is so buggy since the last patch, that it's hard to even tell when you have "fewer" bugs (crashing twice an hour instead of six times an hour is still crashing twice an hour

If you look inside the Engine.Pak File\config\gpu\nvidia.txt you see no GTX 6xx Card at all, this should be fixed.
I get this ERROR: Current display mode is 1920x1080x32, (Unknown graphics card)
And I get "[Error] NVAPI: Unable to get SLI state (-113)" always i think.
And this FIles are missing:
[Error] locomotion-group not found: animations/mechs/jagermech/lmg_files/flight_fs_1.lmg
[Error] locomotion-group not found: animations/mechs/jagermech/lmg_files/flight_take_off_ltf.lmg
[Error] locomotion-group not found: animations/mechs/jagermech/lmg_files/flight_fs_1_fp.lmg
[Error] locomotion-group not found: animations/mechs/jagermech/lmg_files/flight_take_off_ltf_fp.lmg
So why dont fix this DEVS? It dont get better if you collect Errors, and Beta testing dont make any sense if you dont listen to us. Adding DX11 would be nice too.

FX-8350
GTX 670
16G g-skill 1866
650W
The game is currently CPU heavy.
You might have a RAM or CPU issue, instead of a video card issue.

I use "Nvidia Inspector" to edit the Profile, maybe it helps with SLI too.
60FPS v-sync 720P, GPU Temp is about 50-55c, CPU about 55-60c max, with low Effects and high Textures.
Intel i7-2700K
Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H
Gigabyte GTX 660OC, Driver 314.22
16GB RAM
HDD/SSD Intel Smart Response
Windows 8 64 Bit

You try the "Power Throttle" Setting? You could try to lower "Power and Temperature Target" with Nvidia Inspector, just to see if it gets more stable.

Really a i7 3770k and 16GB of 1600 Mhz RAM isnt strong enough for this game? How poorly optimized is this game?
I didn't say it wasn't strong enough.
I said there might be an issue with the CPU or RAM. Bad RAM will crash the system quickly and hard. Try removing 1 GPU and see if it crashes. Replace it with the other one and try.
Remove half of your RAM and try.
If you want to test your videocard, use memtestcl.

Run it from command prompt, and set the RAM to close to your total. Do 400 or more runs and look for errors.
If in doubt, benchmark. I'd test 3D Mark as well. Firestrike tends to crash if you push the system to hard.
