Because someone got their knickers in a twist because another company made more money off of something that looked similar to their art.

Incorrect. The Behemoth up top was done by and outside artist, Victor Music Industries, from Fasa and is not related to the original BattleDroids Behemoth which was from Macross. After the suit with Harmony Gold, any design not done within Fasa was deemed unseen, just to be on the safe side.

Many 'Mechs look different from their original BattleDroids appearance, such as the Firebee, Cestus, and Gladiator, all of which had designs inspired by Macross.

This may be just me... But I don't think it looks enough like the original to classify as copyright infringement. At least in any reasonable society.
