I have just witnessed what was our last our last Mech standing, a Spider engage a Dragon with its one medium Laser at 20m. The Dragon returned fire taking half of the Spider out, but he stood his ground and fired again. The Spider finally died after being hit by 2 x AC10 rounds. The point is He or She didn't run, or fly; they faced the Dragon.

The line between brave and stupid is very fine.

He should have run off and capped.

There is no effing "bravery" in a god damned video game.

Standing your ground in a Spider is stupid. They're designed to run away and live to fight another time, not stand and get eaten by anything else.

Maybe he forgot he was in a spider and thought he had a stalker.

In any case, if you're driving a spider and you're not moving at max speed at all times, you're doing it wrong.

Well at least he tried, but when you say stand his ground I hope he was running and jumpjetting all over and not be a static target.

I love it when light mechs are brave. (As long as they're on the other team.)

The bravest thing I've ever seen was a cop jumping in a river and saving a little girl in a floating car during a flood.

To call any act in a video game bravery when there's no actual risk to a person in a video game is disgusting to me. There are a lot of brave men and women that do things every day that are brave. You're seriously off your rocker if you think a video game has bravery. I think you're just playing this for laughs at this point, which is fine. If you actually think that's brave, well you need to get outside.

Well to be fair I'm pretty sure he meant in-game, so hold your horses there.

I understand that, there's still no bravery in a video game. There's no actual risk to anyone. Bravery is a thing that I hold dear, amd a term that commands respect. While I enjoy video games (I'm here after all) There's no way that any act in a video game needs or uses bravery.

Well if you really think about it I'm sure you can see what he meant with "bravery" as opposed to running off, find a corner and shut down "cowardly". No one is comparing it with a fireman running into a burning building to save children, well maybe except you?

As mentioned earlier, standing your ground to pretty much any other mech is a Spider is stupid. It's an improper use of resources. If the player was CODing, and running around, well that's fine, if they were sitting there and trading shots, then it's essentially suicide. No actual difference from just running outside the map.

Bravery isn't the word.

Really depends on the situation, since his opponent was a Dragon I'd assume it can move close to 100kph so running off and win by cap on a match of Assault won't really be an option, on Conquest it might have been possible to win by capping. Since we don't know the details it's impossible to say if there was a chance to win without fighting.

There was no chance of winning because he or she was the last person on our team standing. My belief is that they had resided themselves to the inevitable and wanted to go out on their own terms; some would and have called it a stupid act; that may be true up to a point, but obviously that Spider pilot didn't see it that way, neither did several members of their team who were providing support over the chat-line.

True it's not real world bravery; that is the preserve of people who do courageous things or get killed in action like many of our sailors did in the Falklands war of 82.

If they were playing Gauntlet back in the day, they'd have heard, "THAT was a heroic effort!"
And their buddy next to them would have muttered, "yeah, that was smooth...", rolling their eyes.

I've stood still in my spider before. Once 450M out from an AC20 cat when I was a noob. Trololol, max range is further then it says in the weapon readout. The other is more recent. Last enemy a zombie Cent with 2 ML on enemy cap, and me with 2 MPL and a ML. He was shooting at my fresh CT, and I was shooting at his mostly fresh cockpit. That one worked out much better, but it was still stupid.

Unless you REALLY know what your doing you do not stop. Ever.

<cough> R <cough>... If the spider had a repair bill waiting for him <cough> &R <cough> ... self-preservation might be better than a selfless act of valor...

:D

Oh, yes... I do know this is going to chaff some arse...
