I think only 1 major change should be made to the cap system:

As soon as an enemy mech steps off the base the cap bar starts to slowly refill which prevents the use of the capping to 99% tactic and then if things go bad in the fight, finish that last 1% to win.

Capping needs to exist as a system to give a weakness to teams that have tons of firepower but a slow movement speed. If caps are removed these teams have no weakness and there is no reason for anyone to play a mech that is not an Assault or Heavy.

Before someone points out the maneuverability advantage a lighter team can have I'd like to point out that many assaults can still keep their weapons focused on lighter mechs by turning at the same time they torso twist to easily hit the faster moving mechs.

That's actually a great justification for having base cap in assault... And as a medium pilot I'm a fan

One could just as easily say: To those of you who like to only play poptarts, ppc/LL stalkers and other slow *** things, please stay the heck out of Mechwarrior Online so we can go back to having fun high speed circle fight brawls again like we used to.

Capping sure causes a lot of enemy rage but even more fun can be had by trolling poptarts who decide to camp their base after falling behind in kills. It's a good defensive move but expecting us to fight on their terms just wasn't going to happen.

Some of the lighter mechs on the winning team were very badly damaged so we had no intention of fighting on the enemy's terms while they camped base. Let's just say they were really angry about it, which made it even more fun to troll those poptarts by running down the clock after the early match fighting.

To those on the enemy team, if some of you hadn't started making all those comments in all chat we might have engaged on your terms, but when you decided to start acting like an *** in chat we're going to waste as much of your time as possible, just to **** you off even more.

Not only did the enemy team outnumber us 7 to 8 but they also had a significant tonnage advantage with 3 assaults vs 1. You guys made a bad choice talking **** in chat and once we got a lead even at a disadvantage at that point it was more about making you guys rage.

It's the most fun I've had in game this week, thanks guys.

Edit - after looking at the names on the unedited version I guess it's probably good that I decided to blur them as there is at least 1 member of the enemy team I don't consider an enemy and have no desire to make him look bad.

I'd make a slight change. You have to stay in the base to make it cap back up faster. Perhaps at half the rate to promote a more offensive play style.

This way a Light can pop in, halfway cap, and a enemy can come back, chase away the light, but then be occupied at the base for a bit. Allowing for more tactics. I'm down for this.

I'm thinking you are saying all lights and mediums stay out of assault. I'm not trying to put words in your mouth that's just what that sounds like.

The trite response is of course:

"Everyone who doesn't want to worry about being capped without defending go play TDM.... oooh sorry about that the Devs decided they wanted people to worry about being capped."

Which is exactly what i'd say if i was a **** and wanted to reduce this to a school yard shouting match.

They should remove base capture entirely from assault mode and just leave a timer.

Lol, That would go fantastically.

Use your forum search function to find all of the endless threads arguing about this.

Accept that TDM is a dumb idea without respawns, then hopefully accept that outside of a drop ship mode respawns aren't coming, then accept that if you get capped it's your own damn fault.

Happiness through acceptance.

Yes. Something should be changed.

To those of you who like to assaulttard their way to the center and poptard for 10 minutes. Stay the heck out of any game. Go play mw4 or CoD if you want to mindlessly poptard.

Or you know, DEFEND YOUR BASE

i'd throw in that if there's shots being fired into the square, the capping auto stops (because i see capping as securing an area... and it's not really secure if you're capping and being shot at)

I got capped 3-4 times in a row yesterday, once where the two highlanders in question had no weapons left and our heavies couldn't actually make it back in time. I don't know why there is such a strong support for capping on this forum, with the thought process that it adds some extra layer of strategy to walking or that a single light mech should be able to split the opposing team in half, but it exists nonetheless, so once more I'd remind everyone that a dedicated deathmatch mode would end all quarrel and satisfy all participants in this particular argument.

I have no problem with a dedicated "deathmatch mode". But I wouldn't want the existing modes to just go away either.

I'm sorry, but there is going to be an "objective" of some sort for any mission that a military force embarks upon. Maybe it's capture of territory. Maybe it's an assalt to taken an objective, or maybe it's to destroy an enemy force. There are going to be other modes eventually so I would suggest patience.

But...i have bad news....even in "death match"...if you think...I'm going to sit there...and go toe to toe with your line of poptarting highlanders, or Atlas DDC's ..you are nuts...I'm going to run you ragged all over a big map in Treb3c, for CN9d until you quit out of frustration before I do that. And some of these maps are big enough for that.

This way, arguably, I have to defend a cap also.....think about it.

So..be careful what you wish for.

To those of you too incompetent to keep an eye on your base lest it be capped, there are plenty of Deathmatch games where "shoot other guy, hurr hurr" is all the thinking that's required. You are those games' target audience, stop denying them the customers they deserve.

They should leave assault alone and add "Hurr Team Deathmatch" mode with no timers, and all the chest-pounding Quake junkies can chase that one Jenner for 3 days until their "mad skillz" win the match.

Timers are the same sort of lame crutch as capping, and would only rob the knuckledraggers of their ability to earn bragging rights by poptarding the entire team down no matter how long it takes.

Op you forgot to add in world of tank style captures. If you shoot them whatever cap they took while they were on it goes away.
