Make it so the further you get from the original loadout of the mech the less xp and cbills you earn.
Mainatiance cost we can call it. Example: You play an atlas, if you only swap say a med laser for a med pulse laser then the penalty would only be slight. But if you totally strip the mech and throw in xl and drop all the weapons for diff weapons then you get smacked with a big xp and cbill penalty. I like it! this could work. It would push people to play less radical designs if they want to earn xp and cbills but also let you play uber mechs if you are just out to play your uber. Thia way it is your choice. "either play balanced and earn or play uber and enjoy" YEAH? NAH?

in addition. If we ever get community warfare this could be applied to house standard variants. the further you get from the house base model of a mech the less you earn. Man, I really like this idea. Probably post a bunch more silly post with this to keep it alive and hopefully noticed. Sure it's not perfect, but hey we can iron out the bugs as we go. It's beta after all.

It would be a good idea if the standard loadouts were somewhat viable. Hero mechs would own.

I vote Nah.
If they want people to play the stock loadouts more, then the stock loadouts need to be more viable. Making someone pay more (or earn less) when using certain variants actually hurts balance more than it helps. New players are forced to make a decision: Do I want to earn money to unlock more mechs, or do I want to run something that has a chance of winning. Experienced players, who have all the money in the world, can afford to run customized builds and stomp their opponents.

I do not know if hero mechs would "own", they would just make more C-bills (which is what they are DESIGNED to do). Out of all the Hero mechs, only the X-5 comes standard with the "best" loadout for the chassis. This idea has merit.

Horrible thread title.
I don't think the suggestion is much better either. I believe all but one of my mechs had a heat efficiency <1 as stock model. Thank you very much.
Besides, ridiculous custom designs are more fun! Why encourage players to play boring mechs. I have no qualms with "unbalanced" custom mechs.
Except light mechs. Damn them to hell.

I see your point. But, what makes stock loadouts less viable is the uber customs. Limit the customs and the stocks become more viable.
But here is an example and I hope it helps. Cent-AL. not the bestest mech around. but if I remove the lrm 10 and put on 2 srm 6s and swap the med lasers for pulses and suffer thru the 1% (rough guess) penalty to xp and cbill then I have a somewhat better mech. but if I take that same AL and drop the engine for an xl and slap endo and ferro on it then max the armor out and totally change the weapons to say an er ppc, 2 med pulse and 2 Ssrm's then your xp and cbill earnings would drop alot to say 15% to 25% penalty. Now that mech may be better for killing. (this is just an example, no comnments on the build). but it isn't as viable as a money maker and exp maker. Also this would open a new avenue for the devs to make mechs that can either cost MC or cbills as house custom variants or pgi custom variants. SO everyone would be hot to by the new all that has a large pulse and 2 streaks vice the base AL with the LL and lrm. Since it was a dev introduced mech there is no penalty. Plus like the champ mechs the community can vote on new models put into the game. and once community warfare starts house can vote on custom chassises in thier stable.

Don't know if he was being sarcastic or not but there you go. perfect example of the state of the game. Also horrible mech designs. For a slight Cbill and XP penalty you could fix that little issue. Plus think of mechs that could be community built, then added into game that wouldn't have these "sub par" stock mech issues.

I'd rather just have a selectable game mode where I could choose the tech level/customization level that I wanted to play with.
Me? I'd play in 3025 tech level with light customization (no engine swaps and limited hardpoint changes).
