Several times I have seen "what should I upgrade first" I will post my experiances inorder to possibly help others with this question. Please post your experience if you have done any upgrades while playing. I have been on Intel all this way, if anyone has any experiance with AMD upgrades please post your experience with MWO and how each upgrade helped/hindered.

Ok, I have gone through a few steps of upgrades while playing I would discount step 0 as it was during the start of closed beta.

Closed beta
step 0

Intel Q6600
4gb ram ddr2 gddr5
MSI HD 6770 1gb

can't remember the fps was mid range (38's) if I remember but it has been over a year since I had this system, also due to the many changes any fps amounts would be worthless. I upgraded due to the cost of DDR2 memory. Also, I bricked the MB while updating the bios trying to fix a memory leak that was rampant at the time in game at that time.

After step 1 all upgrading was done within the last month

step 1

Intel I3 2100
8gb ddr3 system ram
MSI HD 6770 1gb gddr5
Med settings, AA off
1366x768 windowed
25-40 fps

step 2

Intel I5 2500k oc 4.2
8gb system ram
MSI HD 6770 1gb gddr5
all high
1366x768 windowed
38-56 fps

step 3

Intel I5 2500k oc 4.2
8gb system ram
Galaxy gtx560 ti boost 2gb gddr5
alll high
1366x768 windowed
59-60 fps

Hope this helps a few of you.

i just upgrade my older ddr2 dual core to a quadcore, i am considering upgrading my cheap video card that supports dx11,i get around 20fps but wont till they upgrade to dx11,from what i have read dx9 uses the cpu for processes that dx11 would use your graphics card to do,so i would say upgrade anything that makes your comp better but wait for dx11 to decide upgrading your vid card.

sorry didnt see this thread

but if you ask me

i would choose the 3 option upgrade as it will net the best result

avoid step 1 option since you are downgrading yourself with a dual core CPU

step 2 is aright but setting all high detail settings on a 6770 can be risky

In closed beta I ran a Phenom ii x4 975 (which i would have kept if I didn't do CAD work on the side) and HD6870 and got 30 fps with maxed settings. I also ran an alienware m11x R1 on all low settings at 25 fps with dips down to 20 or so.

Open beta
Upgraded to fx8320@4GHz +HD7950 and pegged it at 60 FPS
M11x R1 no longer produced playable fps (10-16)

Post 12V12 my main rig average 40 FPS with dips into the high 20s at 4.2GHz and minimum of mid 30s FPS with 4 cores @ 4.4 GHz.

M11x R1 now produces 5 fps max and missile boating is my only recourse.

In short, PGI keeps screwing up the code and making the game harder to play.

It is interesting that with such a mild overclock (.2 GHz)you got a 10fps improvement on your min, did it help your average? And, a 20 fps hit with that patch is quite alot.

Dragoon20005, I was showing what my improvement in fps was with each upgrade, not asking which I should do.

MWO is a total CPU hog and it doesn't use more than 4 cores very well. I also seems to not like the fx chip's half cores. So I basically gained fps by turning my fx8320 into a Phenom iii x4 and using the extra thermal headroom to add a bit more umph to my CPU.

Generally, it's also true that more core speed on fewer cores is better than splitting the same number of raw GHz over many cores, with the exception of computation-heavy tasks that aren't latency sensitive. Unfortunately chipmakers tend to stay away from very high clock speeds due to the heat and voltage challenges presented, or else come up with things like the recent monster AMD cpu running at 4.7 GHz stock at 220W TDP (about 70% more than most chips on the market, for reference). Doubly unfortunate for AMD users right now is that clock for clock, Intel chips are usually putting out roughly 50% better performance.
