So I'm sure many people here are newegg newsletter subscribers. Anyways they have a deal on the TLC version of the 840 ssd. I'm looking to put an ssd into an older laptop (4.5 yrs old) as a quick and relatively cheap update. Does anyone have any experience with these drives? I'm a little nervous buying the first generation of any new technology to hit the market (TLC nand). Obviously Samsung is a reputable brand, but I also saw they have a deal on the plextor m5 pro xtremes. The laptop can't take advantage of the SATA 3 interface but it seems like the plextor might have more future proofing potential.

I only have hands-on experience with Intel SSDs, which are fantastic, but as brands go I would take a SSD from Samsung way before Plextor. I've also generally heard good things about the 840-series SSDs, and the 830-series before that. We are starting to carry the 840 Pro drives where I work, and so far they seem excellent.

Intel is unfortunately off the list for me. I like their CPUs but am not a fan of the Sandforce controllers they use in the SSDs. I've heard too many horror stories both online and from people in person.

I wouldn't touch any other SSD with a Sandforce controller, but Intel does up their own firmware that seems to be much, much better than what Sandforce themselves produce. But then that is probably because they used to do their own SSD controllers, and so know how to write firmware well. In fact, I think some of their enterprise-grade SSDs are still on Intel-made controllers... but that is neither here nor there.

If Intel is out, my secondary recommendation would be Samsung :D

I'd recommend the Samsungs as well.

While I haven't had any problems with my two sandforce SSDs (running 2 and 3 years now), the Samsung disks are simply better.

<- Dedicated OCZ Vertex user. Will probably be using a Vector for my next build, though.

OCZ?
As C-3PO would say: "Oh, great maker don't let it get near my internals!"

I have personally seen those things die a lot in the systems of my friends. They were also known for a high rate of RMAs for their SSD products. They are restructuring themself to offer more of a premium product, but until I have seen some numbers confirming a better quality, I wouldn't touch them.

They aren't all bad. When those drives work and survive their first 6 months, they work well (enough ;) ).

The samsung 840 pro series is the best atm, but the Plextor m5p is also a very good performaning SSD.

Personaly i would go with the best performance ..the samsung BUT there is no real reason not to go for the Plextor.

Infact back when i got my Corsair Performance Pro, i thought about getitng a Plextor m3, in the end i went with corsair ..for no real reason other than i had other corsair stuff lol.

I heard a lot of things too. AFTER I bought my first one and had zero issues.

So out of protest I used one in my next build. Still going strong.

And my next one, the PC I`m typing this on.

I chalk it up to RNG, because I used to be the only person on Earth to regularly have Plextor burners fail on me. I think this must be Karma`s way of evening the score :P

Its not the Pro version I was looking at. Just the regular 840. If it was the Pro vs the plextor I'd go 840 pro every time unless there was a real solid deal on the m5. Do you still recommend the TLC regular 840 series?

I have the 840 Pro 256g in this...my wife has an older gen 830 128g in hers, I just installed the 840 250g in a friend's comp a month back or so.

I cannot say how much I love these drives. There was a little iffyness in their included software(cloning software at the time failed), but the new version of the Samsung Magician is handy, and works nice, and all these drives meet or exceed quoted speeds when using AHCI with proper setup and drivers on my two systems plus his.

EDIT: While not sure on the m5...a buddy has an m3 256g he loves and it's still going strong...the Sammy's beat it in all benchmarks for the most part however.(not a ton though)

Don't blame me, I had nothing to do with it......

But seriously, I've run OCZ mostly in the enterprise PCIE-SSD categories and have had no issues with them. I have had some REVO 2 X2 fail, but the RMA's ones have been running strong. We've deploy several hundreds of the regular Vertex 3 SSD (Max IOPS) and haven't seen one fail yet. We did have a system get hit by a katyusha rocket, over in Afghanistan but the drive survived....

If you have hands-on exp on a SSD, the way you write back across forums would definately be different. Folks, I have been using Intel 520 SSD from the time it was lauched and havent had a single issue till date. touch wood! Kingston & OCZ are also good, but I am a big fan of Intel. Moreover, I have experienced myself that SF based SSDs are smarter than the rest in terms of performance & reliabity. Try it yourselves, just dont get fooled by others experiences. Check out the SF/LSI blog if you have time - http://blog.lsi.com/

dual kingston hyperX 3k 120gb ssd's at Raid0 here.
So far i had no problems, been running them about half a year or so. I can recommend them from personal experience.

But also, can recommend samsung 840 series, heard many good things about them and have been fiddling with them at my workplace, RMA amount is quite nonexistent, which proves that they are made of the "good" stuff =)

I had a 830 for some time now(only 64GB) for my os
Used it when they first came out

Have upgraded to a 840 pro, but after all that time I still use my 830, now to put every temp folder, cache n firefox cache on it
And what can I say, in the samsung software I can see, that the 830 still has the same performance as day one(but I set some overprovisioning as safety)

Personally, I will never buy another ssd from some other company (got burned by a kingston ssd once)

On a side note, if you can find a 830 for a good deal, take, performance difference between 830 n 840 pro aint that big

The Plextor M5Pro is better than the standard Samsung 840, so just going by performance, i would go for the Plextor.

tomshardware has a benchlist of SSD's with different read and write tests and access times, power use, etc.
The overall read, overall write, and overall score, all show that the Plextor m5 Pro and the Samsung 840 Pro consistantly score near or at the top on all tests, sometimes beaten by other SSD's but those SSD's are ether top on read and low on write. .or visa versa, so for the best of both worlds the 840 pro and M5 Pro are the best. The standard 840 is bassicaly like a lower tier SSD, so 840 standard vs M5 Pro ..the M5 Pro wins.
