Fix it.
Opinions are like bathtubs, everyone has one and no one wants to hear about yours. Here is mine.
TLDR Summary: This is an important component for command mechs because it gives them something to do outside of shoot, and at 3 tons, offsets some weapons making it a choice to carry or not. It has to have some solo and team effects that allow it to be both good enough but not OP.
Command Console:
3 tons, 1 Critical slot
It should have features that improve team coordination as well as provide small but meaningful bonuses to the person equipping it to make it worth taking at 3 tons. That is more than the difference between a ppc and a large laser.
Team benefits: Coordination: Tie command console to the existing taking lead functions on the battle grid. Add some intelligence to the system. Along with voice feedback. Yes, hire a voice actor to say things like "move to", " C3/C4", and "and hold."
I estimate that this will take a professional voice actor 1 day to read the lines a sufficient number of times.
The in game voice over would necessitate the ability to mute that voice when 13 year old boys feel the need to spam, "shoot my target bro"
This would lead into the first personal bonus:
When your team does things you tell them as commander you get an XP bonus, you team engages in C3 where you told them to, 25XP, You target alpha and alpha goes down, 25XP, you lead your team to victory, 25XP. Nothing your team can do can cost you points except losing which costs you all 100 points of your loser bonus.
Imagine: if at the the beginning of the fight the atlas in charge gave the directions, "move to way point alpha in C3 then head to E3 and hold." If that was a sound strategy people would follow it and then you would at least have a semblance of a plan for pug players. And tie a key to "Stick together."
This is an important implementation as we're only able to handle so much sensory input at a time. In battle we're able to read text chat but it draws our eye from the games focus and reduces immersion. Meanwhile another key sense is only being affected by the sound environment. Adding, "Target Charlie" or "Delta is good for missiles" to the audio sense, it allows our visual sense to stay immersed in the action of the game.
Other Personal Bonus:
Light beagle active probe functionality. It would allow for counter ECM functionality, and sensor range boost, while stacking with sensor range module and BAP allowing a command mech to block the ECM of multiple enemies.
Increased target lock: add the functionality of the target decay module for 1 second, make this stack with module.
Increased target info gathering: +10% reduce time to gather target info, stacks with module.
Increased cap speed: +5% stacks with module.
Increased sensor range: 10% Stacks with BAP and Module.
I want the command console to augment the basic modules and add to your experience even when you are not the leader so that if 1 or 2 pugs have it but aren't command it was still worth their 3 tons.
You need incentives to use things without making those incentives the end all be all in the game. Allowing one mech to earn up to an additional 350 XP per match for being the commander isn't OP; Having 10% faster info gathering, 5% faster capping, 10% Sensor range, 1 second of target decay, and ECM countering isn't over powered.
Alone the bonuses aren't that special but in a DDC with the 3-4 corresponding modules to really make them work, you could be looking at an atlas with +35% sensor range, 4.25 seconds of decay, 20% faster capping, and 35% faster info gathering. OP? not really because you still have to pilot said mech and divert your attention to running your team.
Thoughts?
That's it, that is what I have, the majority of the functions are already in game so it's just a matter of adding that code to the command console. For 3 tons it's able to augment many things you might want to do in your assault or heavy mech.
