Okay, so I did search for my answer but after about 10 minutes I'm opting for a post.
I have been working up my mech of choice and now have 3 variants unlocked at the basic level (Yeah I know I'm slow but baby doesn't sleep through the night yet). So, do I have to unlock all the elite levels on 3 variants before I can get the module slot?
And, if that is the case... well crap, that something like 43,000 experience just to get the Elite and Master Slot opened and that's x3?
Wow. that's going to take a long time.
Oh, and once unlocked I'll still have to buy the actual module, correct?
Okay, share your wisdom, please.

If you don't have any mechs through Elite in that particual weight class (i.e. heavy, medium, etc.), you need to get all 3 variants of your mech through Elite in order to unlock Master.
If you already have mechs through Elite in that weight class (i.e. you have mastered Hunchbacks and are working on Cicadas), you will get Master unlocked as soon as you go through Basic on 3 variants. In other words, you still need to go through Basic on all 3, but you only need to go through Elite / Master on the one (ones) you like.

You will need to unlock the module with GXP (global unlock, needs to be done only once, makes module available for all mechs), then purchase that module with C-bills (with MC in some cases). This purchased module goes into a single mech as piece of equipment - you can move it around your mechs, but if you want to have it on two mechs at the same time, you need to buy a second module.
Hope this helps a bit.

It will if you do it the hard way.
Chances are you already have a butt-load of Mech XP on one of your main mechs. Use MC to convert that to GXP...and then use the GXP to elite all your other mechs.
It is actually fairly cheap to do this...like under $5 in MC total. I could easily elite all my highlanders this way...I just don't care about the module slot. I wanted the Elite items.
You have to spend money, but hey, that is the point of MC. To bypass grinding.

your mech already comes with 1-3 module slots. the xp is for an additional one. if you already know this, please disregard. it was a mistake i made when i first started

Like given for trying to research it before asking. This is a common question, the better search title is "Pilot Trees" or "Mech Trees."
For unlocking Master, you do not actually need those 3 specific variants (but they will work). You need 3 mechs of the same weight class pushed through Elite. So, 1 Dragon, 1 Catapult, and 1 Cataphract all pushed through Elite will allow you to unlock Master for them, even if no other variants of those chassis were pushed that far. This is because all 3 are heavy mechs. Same is true for light, medium, and assault mechs. Hero mechs also count towards this tally.
Further advice and/or things said in the past.

At one point Master gave 8x on basics and 2x on elites.
But back then, all "Basic" attributes raised you by 2.5%. So 8x brings you up to 20%.
Can't remember what elites brought you up by, but it was a rather trivial in amount.
Then for a bit, it was 12.5% It went down to 4x basics on Master.
Then 8% on all basics.
At the time I post this, there's stuff ranging from 5% to 33% on Basic. You get 2x Basics on Elite, and nothing for Mastering but the module slot. There is no more 3 times.

You need 3 elite mechs to reach the Master unlock. So I wouldn't sell them right off the bat if you're also interested in that extra module slot.
Also, be wise. Don't spend your GXP. You need the general experience for unlocking individual modules.

{Redacted} is plenty helped here.
But since this topic is up I thought I might ask for some advice on this rather than starting a new thread.
I'm trying to find a lore friendly way of explaining what mech and pilot efficiencies are. Here's what I came up with.
-------------------
Mech/Pilot Efficiencies
An engineer designs things from a speculative point of view. A pilot makes them practical.
Battlemechs are like hot rods. The pilot uses them, gets to know them, and learns their ins and outs. It is with this knowledge and experience that the pilot can determine what would make his or her Battlemech more responsive to input. Shorten a wire here, bypass a redundancy there, improve airflow somewhere and voila, it works better!
We summarize them as Mech Efficiencies. These are hardware modifications and Variant specific. Such mods can be anything from improving heat dissipation to manipulating the interface between the control software and hardware for improving response time.
There are three tiers of Mech Efficiencies.
Basic, which are specific to one variant. Elite, which is gained through an individual's experience with three variants of one chassis. And Master, which is knowledge gained from fully expanding elite modifications from 3 mechs in one weight class.
--------
Pilot Efficiencies are another form of modification garnished through a pilot's overall experience. With time, mission drops and hear-say, pilots become aware of unconventional and expensive software modifications to improve their rigs. These software modifications are not chassis/variant specific, and as such are rapidly adapted to suit any battlemech. These include sensor enhancements, targeting system modifications, control software hacking suites (capture speed), and others.
----------------------
Thoughts so far?

Ah heck I've been working on three variants of the Atlas because I thought it all had to be the same chassis. So, here's where I am at. 3 Atlas all unlocked at basic level. So at this point should I just push forward with the 3 mechs I have and get elite unlocked on them...

You may slightly misunderstand the module slot. It's an EXTRA module slot. All mechs have at least one, some have up to three base module slots, and the Master Level unlock adds one to that.

i hear ya on how long it takes.. I have been working on 3 HBK's for almost 3 weeks now.. I have still yet to get enough GPX to unlock a single module to use though....
I'm thinking the one that lets you see a mech on radar behind you for up to 200m is it? that seems useful..
the zoom, and the one that keeps a mech on radar behind a hill also seem pretty useful.
