What conditions have to be met to get kill assist? Is it only damage or there are other direct/indirect ways to get kill assist?

Fire at and hit every enemy once, and you will get eight Assist bonuses every match.

An Assist bonus really is just given for doing even one point of damage to an enemy.

To be honest, the only condition you need to meet is to make some sort of physical contact with the enemy. Easier by shooting, but you can simply run into them. Just bumping them is enough to get a kill assist when they die.

In the instance below, a Raven loses his leg when he bumps into me as I'm turning to face him. This, admittedly, is because I am much larger than him.
