I used to have a problem with these uber crashes, where while playing (whether tabbed in or not) my screen will suddenly go black and I'll hear a buzzing sound that continues until I shut the computer down completely holding the power button. I then have to do a cold boot and choose to start windows normally in order to come back up.
These problems went away a patch or two ago, but since yesterdays hotfix they are back full force. These are really aggravating as I lose anything I was doing while multitasking. This problem needs to be fixed ASAP.
Hard Crashes Are Back

Where would I find these logs? I can get a dxdiag to post no problem.
This is happening even more often than it used to. It has happened 4 of the last 5 games I have played. This is very aggravating and outright ridiculous. I know it's Beta, but this is seriously a terrible terrible bug whatever is causing it. It's annoying when your game has issues, its worse when it spills over into everything I'm multitasking.

Same here, never had those before. The crash leaves no crash dump to send by the way.

I sent the relevant logs to the support email. A unit member suggested running the MWO repair tool, I will try that and post the results.

I tried using the repair tool, no luck. I reinstalled the game, and I've had them less frequently, but they still occur.

Oh I also get them. Black Screen of Death, essentially. I.e. no reactions on any input (including alt-tab and ctrl-alt-delete). Only happens when playing MWO.
It's very unlikely this can be solved by PGI, though. A program should not be able to crash the whole OS if it's not run with admin rights, and even if (*), it should not be able to do so unless meddling with the kernel / drivers.
That is, there's a bug either in the OS or in a driver (or in DirectX). If those crash, a BSOD (blue or black) can happen. If an application crashes or communicates with the driver/OS in a "wrong" way, only this application should crash.
AFAIK the only thing PGI can do is trying to avoid triggering the bugged behaviour of the driver/OS, but it is very likely CryEngine imposes a too great abstraction to allow avoiding a specific request.
(*) MWO currently does run with elevated/admin rights, which is a really bad IMO; and AFAIK only required for the patcher and storing the config files at a wrong place (wrong when considering what MS says about this topic) or with too restrictive/unadjusted file access rights (hello ACL). Just use the non-elevated token (of the user who started the application) for launching the MWO process after the patcher.

Well, I ONLY have this happen while playing MWO, and I've run other games as admin. So it suggests to me that whatever the problem is, it's unique to MWO (it could be caused by MWO, or it could be that all of the other games have it working).
The fact that it was temporarily fixed during the extra-rubber-bandy patch cycle tells me it is definitely on the part of MWO, and probably has to do with how they're doing netcode (since the hotfix to end rubber banding brought it back).
Whatever the issue is, I am deeming this game unplayable until it can get resolved. If it would just crash to desktop, I'd be iffy, but fine with it. I will try back next patch to see how the game is, but until then, I will have to find something else to fill my time.

It happened to me, caused by a memory leak, or a VRAM overload due to too high graphic settings.
Fixed by lowering some heavy features, like particles, shading and texturing to lower levels.
Some friends reported crashes caused by the Vsync option being enabled.
Try looking at your nvidia/ATI panel to check if you didnt force some upgrades, like MSAA and other heavy features.
And dont forget to delete your shaders folder, in addition, just in case

Well, I for one had massive memory leaks, even 12GB of Ram not enough. Eventually I slapped in 24Gb of memory to at least delay the crash. I improved stability before that by moving PhysX to Processor and turning off every process I could, including Windows explorer. Turning off Windows explorer together with all of the above resulted in an increase in stability, leaving explorer enabled and 12Gb of Ram resulted in the fps bug/Freeze screen/CTD issue in at least 60% of cases, or the framerate dropping to 12 and never recovering after that in game.
Blue screen of death with memory allocation errors, CTD, the whole lot. Been there done that. Some people cannot now even run the game with 16Gb.
Looking at the omicron.log file shows that buffers are still not being freed properly on shutdown of MWO.
I will forbear to comment further, but the shoe should fit nicely, by now ...

Note that r_texturesstreaming is the only thing left over from the CB override file created for Forest colony. At least at one stage leaving this command in there improved framerates in game by about 20. (say about 2-3 weeks back)
