The clans in the board game are fine because they generally understand the game and history.
The clans in Mechwarrior lack the full history of the universe and tend to be gung ho herp derps.
Discuss.

I mean, yeah, Btech's complex, but look where it stands with start IS. You have PPCs, Autocannons (of various sort which break down into 'hit harder, less ammo') Lasers (Small, Medium, Large) PPCs, Missles (Short/Med/Long with numbers indicating damage), and Machine Guns. You have armor and jump jets and various configurations there of. it's all sort of apparent and out there pretty straightforward once you learn a few of the smaller rules. Okay, later you get stuff like LBX (Shotguns) but, by and large, simple.
Now we have Omnimechs. Now we have FF armor, Endo Steel construction. We have Clan ER Lasers, Clan PULSE Lasers, double heat sinks etc etc. It breaks down into 'Takes more room, is better'. A new set of weapons similar to, but slightly different than.
THEN we get the IS copy-not-quite-CLAN ER lasers/Pulse/ER PPCs/everything else. These are slightly less effecient, have different tradeoffs, etc etc etc.
So from a new player perspective, we go from having 3 'kinds' of lasers to like 18. We go from like 9 types of missile launchers to something like 18-27 (I don't remember if the IS upgraded MRMS or LRMs, just Streaks), all with weirdly similar names but which all behave differently. It was a little muddled in the TT (Though nowhere NEAR as muddled as it got later in its life) and I just see it as being kind of muddled for newer players. ESPECIALLY when they won't have a framework to draw on, such as an SP campaign that basically shows off the early clan invasion, for example.

But no, seriously. Work to educate these people, and lead by example. We've got a year at least to head off the "whar Madcat?" bullshittery before it starts.

Then, when I got into all of the novels and such, it really made the clans look like the root of all evil, so when it comes to it, the only clans I like are Wolf in Exile and the Wolf's Dragoons, which really aren't clan... It is the "buy American" in me that says "Stay away from Clan Tech!". Even Duncan Fisher in MW4: Mercs gives solaris players a hard time for using clan tech.
Hopefully clan stuff will be hotter, bigger, and far more expensive to repair. I really hope that people who invest in clan tech have to work for it, and not just be noobs look for easy kills.

What do you mean Mad Cat IIIs and Partial wings? Aren't partial wings BA equipment and Mad Cat IIIs are dark age mechs, right?

Partial wings are experimental tech that appear during the jihad and can be mounted on mechs.

The Mad Cat III also makes an appearance in the jihad era as well.

Not being able to fly like an eagle would warrant a sad face from me.Then again,I doubt it would be able to extend the range of anything heavier than a cougar (which can jump 7 hexes with it) in a meaningful way.Still would be fun to see though and would lead to some interesting use of jump jets.
