? What? you say? What is this about?
Well its about the rest of us. Those of us that will not get an invitation to the Beta.
I ask, is that so bad?
Many of you will say yes, or Hell Yes or lots of other ways to convey their feelings that not getting an invitation is bad.
Well, for me, not so much. Sure, i would like to get an invitation, but, its ok if I dont. My life wont change much if I dont.
I still have my ftf gaming group weekly. I still have my MW4Mercs buds that I game with as often as I like at night to fill that MW void. If I feel like meching during the day, there are some folks on line, but there is also the ability for me to create my own server and blast away at some bots.
You dont like bots? Bots in MW4Mercs were terrible, you say? Anyone can kick their butts, you say? I dont disagree. That is why I learned to mod their scripts and make them better. Sure no AI in a game can simulate what an actual player will do at any given moment, but, you can make them tougher, smarter and able to "team up" on you as well as go passive and hide or sneak up. Yeah they still do some really dumb things and yeah they get hung up on map artifacts, but overall they are much better than those that came with the game.
So that is how I pass the time waiting on the "game" to come out, or get in on the beta, but what about the game itself?
I have been a beta tester before, not for MWO, but for others. As a beta tester, you are bound by NDA so you really cant talk to your buds about how awesome the game is gonna be until the Devs say you can. YOu cant post "screenies" of cool stuff you did in game or even mention what you did, unless the Devs say its ok.
Because the game is in "Beta" stage, things dont always work correctly, including your (high dollar) system. Conflicts with this or that software, random crashes that you have to try to recreate or at least remember what was going on at the time. Constant updates when you log in, "yesterday we were on version 27, but today its up to 33 so far", so you have to download the updates, usually in order (no combined batch update) just to get in the game when really all you wated to do today was get home from work, open your favourite beverage, load up the game and kick some booty.
Did I mention report writing? Some Devs require that you issue reports on this or that and sometime they have a check list of things you HAVE to check out to see if it is a bug or just something with one particular user.
Another thing about being a beta tester, some folks just want to get in there and blow up everything that moves. Check out the latest weapon or electronic or different type of armour or anything new and not really checking on the things that shoud be examined. In other words, they jsut want to play, not get the game ready for everyone else to play.
Being a Beta Tester is an honour but it comes with responsibility. Its not about getting to play the game we have all been waiting for (for) years. Beta Testers must make the game right for everyone. Find the flaws, the bugs, the little silly things that dont seem like much, but are there. Its not all fun and games, its almost like another job.
SO, not getting to be a Beta is not so bad. I have patience. I can wait. I also trust that the Devs and the chosen testers do it right. I hope they make this THE game we have wanted and can enjoy for years to come. When i bought MW4Mercs or Vengeance actually, I NEVER thought that 10 or 12 years from that time that I would still be playing it and ENJOYING it. Let us hope that the Devs and Beta Group do MWO some justice and make this another legendary game.
I can wait, its not so bad

Started to read, then scrolled down and realized it was just a brick of writing. Didn't get past "is that so bad?"

Yep, the life of a game tester. It isn't glamorous, and filling out bug reports is sort of a drag, at times, but it's by far the best job I've held so far. :P

OK, I laughed.

I'd love to be playing but somewhere up there, there is a point - the beta isn't really about playing as it is about finding problems and making sure things work. I'm OK with being a beta tester, I'm OK with waiting. I know that the longer I wait, the closer I am to playing a finished game when the time comes for me and my Founder mech to take the field.

I'm almost glad i haven't received an invite yet. If i did i might play the game so much that i grow tired of it before it is released.
That would be a bad thing.

Personally I would prefer to actually get into this particular Beta Testing as I am a person that has actually Played the FASA version of this game. I would love to get my hands on an actual mech and thunder around the countryside while laughing at people in their tiny cars. Then shoot at them! lol

Like most; i would love to get into beta.

However, I would want to gety in mid or late beta. I am currently in the FireFall Beta and yes i do my job. However there are things like getting stuck on pebbles when sprinting or jetpacks having a seiger that really anoy me. But then i imagine how it was like for people who got early invites. THey must have been falling through the world ever 10 steps, every other mob must have been broken one way or another.
I dont think i could keep testing with so many issues, random texture bugs, invissible objects, and missreading of commands is abotu as much as i can take.

I say it's better off not being in BETA so we get the BEST impression of the game without having to have deal with all the bugs and annoyances :P

The actual meaning of beta has become irritatingly fuzzy in recent years. So we may not enter CB, but that just means we don't get to test things straight away. No big loss then =)
