Style: I tend to end up in close combat/frontal assault or support fire role, so i've been thinking of buying an Altas (the 13 mil one) - but will i have to work hard for additional CB's to customize it?

Or should i buy a less expensive mech (ca 9 mil, Catapult or something) and have spare CB's for mods?

Thanks in advance!

Take a Cataphract. You can fit them for most roles and you dont need to farm a lot of extra c-bills.

I agree.
Also, a Centurion could also fill this role nicely.
It would have more speed and can hit pretty hard.
It would also allow you plenty of room for customization.

When buying mechs, I always double the price and save so I can
afford to customize it since upgrades and engines are expensive.
In this sense, I would save a lot more for the Atlas...
;)

dont buy the 13mil atlas, at least not first, its expensive because it comes with a 300xl engine that will just get you killed.

if you want an atlas, the RS, and DDC make excelent choices and are significantly cheaper.

if your just starting out it might be better to not blow all your money on the mech as youll probably need to buy alot of weapons and upgrades so a heavy is a good choice. from what you said, the cataphract would be the best choice.

Definitely get a cheaper mech. Either a medium or heavy. They aren't as sturdy as an Atlas but they'll have more speed to get you (in and) out of trouble. They're also cheaper to grind since you need 3 of them to get all the pilot upgrades on the chassis.

edit:

And you want the Pilot upgrades. Mechs come alive when you do.

The Atlas is a fine choice if you want something big and slow and the focus of a lot of enemy attention. It can also take a lot of punishment, but you have to be totally committed to an engagement. You don't have the speed or maneuverability to disengage like a medium mech can.

As for which one, I would say ignore the atlas K completely. It trades one weapon hardpoint for a second AMS. You simply won't run into enough missiles to make that worthwile, and the XL engine is a terrible idea for an Atlas (unless you plan to stay back from combat and fire long range weapons).

Remember that you will want at least 1.5 mil for DHS (this immediately frees up 10 tons for any Atlas, with the same heat efficiency), possibly 1-2 mil for an engine upgrade, another 1 mil (I think) for endo-steel (this may not be useful to you; I use it others don't), plus the cost of any weapons that you may need. So yeah, you should have 1.5 to 2 times the cost of a mech in order to customize it.

well the 13 mil atlas is WORST model of all atlases ;) it has fewest loadout options of them all in exchange for additional ams

go for different atlas (each of them is good)

and for brawling... hmm catapracht or cent do very well
for support... catapult c1 or k2 is a good choice or you could go for stalker

Get the Atlas D-DC.
It's one of my favourite mechs. And having ecm is wonderful.

Its difficult to give you an advice, because you dont tell us, which 'Mechs you already have. ;)

I am rather fond of the mediums and the light 'Mechs, but everyone has a different opinion in these matters. And even playing an Atlas you can die really quick.

I agree with the other foristas, that the DDC is the better choice. One of the reasons is, it can mount ECM.

Personally I have a lot of fun with the Trebuchet 7M and the Cicada 3M at the moment. Even the Spider I play a lot actually is a lot of fun.

If you want lots and lots of Firepower go with a Stalker!

The Cataphract and me we didnt become friends. Another heavy 'Mech model I soon want to buy is the JagerMech. Dual AC20 or Dual Gauss... That makes boom. <_< My team mates do a lot of kills and damage with them.

Cataphract 3D, most customizable mech (except missiles).

All good advice above!

A medium or heavy would be a great choice to start with, piloting an Atlas can get you killed very easily as you tend to get focused on as people want you dead! The Stalker wouldn't be a bad choice, i would reccomend the STK-3F as this has the highest torso twist of the Stalkers (which makes it awesome!)

My main piece of advice would be before you spend any money on mechs, get onto this website:
http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab
make an account, it makes things easier later on so you can save builds. But this website will allow you to play around and see what equipment you can actually get onto that Atlas or Cataphract BEFORE you buy it and realise you can't do what you wanted!!

@ Vincian: I think hes buying his first Mech. Saved up 13Mil and now wondering what to get.

I always suggest new players to either buy a Hunchback or Cent, they are quite cheap, easy to pilot and pretty much all rounders so you can find your playstyle.

I would recommend buying a heavy or assault, never mind if you can't afford to outfit it completely. Saving up for extra bits is fairly quick. But once you spend your bonus starter credits it will be a LONG time before you'll see these amounts again. It's a lot easier to grind the 2-3mil for a light or 3-4 for a medium.

I'm a fairly new player got myself a Hunchback SP and a Spider D (both of which are good fun btw). Now I'd like an assault for some real firepower but with the average winnings of 80k - 100k per match that will take ages.

Yagerbomb! Because dakka.

Also, it has better ballistic placement than a cataphract. The yagerbombs arms are slightly above it's head, so you can always shoot wha you can see. The Cataphract seems to have autocannon hard points in its knee and left foot.

Yeah, in general everything is pricier the heavier the mech is.

A lot of time the additional cost is due to it having an XL engine. But you can always sell those. Most mechs (all?) do not have double heat sinks, which is another 1.5 million right there.

If you are sure you will enjoy the Atlas more, save for it. Selling mechs is not real efficient in this game. They depreciate a LOT after you buy them.

Dakka is not the best Jager. BOOM BOOM is the best one.

Current meta says mechs with ballistics and lazors are the way to go at the moment. The Cataphract 3D is pretty handy, and comes with a sexy 280XL engine that will make any lights you may decide to get in the future go zoom zoom.

Do not buy the 13 mill Atlas K. As discussed, it is the worst for hardpoints. Get the DDC If you really want an atlas.

As a first mech, you should buy the mech that most calls to you. You will be spending a lot of time in it, and probably a couple of variants too, so it should be a mech that suits your playstyle (the cockpit is also important...) You seem drawn to the Atlas, so I would suggest you get an Atlas. You can build up the funds to improve it at the same time as earning the XP to improve it. :D

So as others have said, the D-DC and RS are probably the best variants. The D is OK, but a bit meh, and the K is a bit rubbish despite the cost. I would suggest an ECM equipped D-DC myself, and the first thing you should save for is a STD340/350 engine to improve mobility, which is the greatest weakness of the chassis.

Atlas isn't a good choice now.
Considering:
- 1.5 MCB for DHS
- 0.5 MCB for endo-steel
- 2 MCB for weapons

Assault
Stalker 5LL http://mwo.smurfy-ne...193692c8a57f876

Medium
Centurion http://mwo.smurfy-ne...adb1441feb13e4a

Heavy
Dragon 4LL http://mwo.smurfy-ne...c39109cff8e575f (too expensive 13.8 MCB)

Favourite mech at the moment is the HGN-732C. Money well spent if you're looking to try something new. One of the best brawler assault chassis I've ever used. Load it up with an AC20 or 2xUAC5's and some LPL and SRMs and you have a close range monster that can get the jump on other brawlers at close range with JJ. I average 800 damage.

This is with endo steel, double heatsinks and a big XL engine though so it costs a pretty penny...
