I was just in a match, and if i saw correctly, I died from 1 shot from a 2x gauss mech. It hit me in the rear side torso.
(I was completely fresh otherwise, unless someone else shot me at the exact same time and it was silent)

I was driving a jagermech DD with an xl225 engine (dont laugh, i am just trying to earn enough money to buy endo steel and a 225 regular engine so i figured i would see how unbearable the speed is)

Anyways, i had 10 points of rear torso armor, and the other 50 points were in the front.
(max armor for a jager is 60 pts in the side torso)

Since the armor maxes at 60 points, that means i should have 30 points of internal armor.

10 armor + 30 internal = 40 points.

How did i die from a 30 point alpha strike?

Is the engine vulnerable to critical hits or something???

This is a serious question... did PGI add critical hits to engines?

Ive been 1 shot before (2x ac20 jager, gauss cat when i was in a jenner) but those times it made sense, considering the armor rating.

I dont mind that some mechs can possibly die in 1 shot... Im just wondering how it happened this time...

Yes, any piece of equipment can be critically hit. That includes your engine. It happens.

OK, I'll ask this, but don't jump on me. Do you carry any ammo in your side torso that could have been crit? Not sure if they have ammunition critical explosions in at this stage or not.

Unless it slipped in as an unannounced change, having your engine crit out (in MWO) has no effect, you still only die from losing:
  • both legs
  • cockpit
  • center torso
  • either side torso if using an XL
I've had similar situations, where I've been hit once in my Jenner, front CT, and been down to red internals. That's a minimum of 50isn pts of damage, and more likely 55 with my armor allocation.

Eventually I just figured it was 2 different snipers hitting me at the same time for a combined damage total.

Ammo crit hits have been in since I was in beta, but for some reason ammo only explodes 10% of the time when crit currently.

Good question, but Nope, i had nothing there but the XL engine.

I read awhile back that critical hits on the engine did nothing, other than add to the repair costs. Is this no longer the case? If so, where is your source?

Well, the easy way to test is to shoot someone's exposed CT with an MG and see if they die at all before you've gone through their internals.
My assumption is that it's not implemented for a number of reasons:
  • Since the last time I saw it confirmed as not implemented no PGI update has stated it as implemented
  • Last PGI say on the matter is I think in one of the "Ask the Devs" posts
  • No massive QQ about OP quad-MG spiders
  • Last word from PGI was that engine destruction wouldn't necessarily ever be implemented, and even if so wouldn't necessarily cause mech destruction, only impairment.

Given that he hit you in the BACK, you don't really know what hit you.
i.e., more than one mech could have shot you.

actually, i was inside the crashed ship on frozen city, and there werent a lot of angles to shoot me from.

Plus i heard a gauss noise, and nothing else.

As soon as i died, the guy who shot me was like "boom" and i was like "2x gauss?" and then proceeded to observe from my teammates point of view and confirm that he was infact using 2x gauss.

Crits on weapons and equipment like ECM is modeled and working.

I have heard directly from a dev, however, that crits are NOTcurrently impacting engines. Don't know if that will change in the future though.

Right now the only way to die by engine destruction is to be cored (or lose a side torso with an XL).

if there's 2x gauss there's usually 2+ med las on the mech as well. Morale of the story is 10 armor on your back in anything other than a light is bad, mkay.

It's a forum, you're talking to everyone.
If you want to address one person, I suggest sending them a PM. ;)

He probably had more. Nobody runs just two gauss, generally. There's nearly always at least 2, maybe 4 Medium Lasers for backup. In addition to the potential Roland mentioned of anyone else firing at you.

Posts like the OP's? If you're going to do that, take a screenshot of your death screen showing the last few things to hit you. But even then, if it's all the same weapon (ie, two people with Gauss rifles) it may still read as just "Gauss Rifle" and nothing else.
